I can't buy a hit on a wake bait. Do you fish them shallow and close to cover? Did you flip those weeds?

There are some days they just dont want to hit topwater or wake bait even though its close by or could turn head and break water due to shallowness, some days want one thing only if top.To me that screams horny toad.
Or a pink double barrel bass buster. And yes both can catch snakeheads. |

Ok, I'm giving it up - in areas like that back in Mattawoman Cr. I've done pretty good throwing a 4" hollow body swim bait (on 50# braid) back in the pads and working it back slowly, stopping and letting it sit or fall as the pads allow and twitch it. Just be sure to skin hook the point in the back of the bait so it comes through the vegetation easily. It definitely works better around high tide where you have less vegetation above the water line. The conditions pictured would be fine.

The small swimbaits do well in this type of area. Didn't have any rigged at the time.
Had plenty of baits to sling in this area but just couldn't find the right one. Wake, Baby 1, Chatterbait, craws and yum 8" worm were all used in the area. Caught a mess of short fish in an area to the left of this pic and also caught some keepers further back in this feeder creek.....but just couldn't get anything here. |
