Can someone tell me how you can tell when you have over heated your motor?I have a 1989 yamaha 50 pro. Im not sure if i have a buzzer or not.I know i don't have a gauge to tell me.I believe my head gasket is blown because when i remove the bottom spark plug and crank it water is spitting out the plug hole. And im hoping i didn't do any damage the other day.She will fire right up no problems starting.I didn't notice any steam or anything coming from the motor. But i was wondering what are the signs of a outboard thats been ran hot.Its easy for a car there are signs like radiator smoking. But im new to this boat thing and im not sure what to look for thanks for any replies .Im also going to do my head gasket myself.Any tips on doing that would be helpful also.Sorry for so many questions guys. But im sick worrying about this motor thing guys please be patient with me.Also does anyone know what the torque is for the head ?

take it to your repair shop they will fix it.. yamaha's have 100 pound head bolt torx settings btw. you have to unbolt them in a certain pattern or you get busted bolts..

I dropped my boat off at the repair shop today.I hope i didn't do any damage to the head or anything else.It never overheated as far as i can tell.Im hoping the guy that i got it from never overheated the engine. It looked like no one ever did any head work on it before. So maybe i will be ok.I was thinking that maybe the guy overheated the engine and patched it up good enough to sell it.If this was the case. How long do you think the head gasket would have held up? If lets say there was some damage to the power head.

You know, I have had plenty of things go wrong over the years with automobiles and boats. I have learned that you can overthink things. I'm a hypocondiac when it comes to machinery. But it doesnt help to worry. See what your boy at the shop says first.

I have learned that a liberal amount of Liquid Wrench the night before on the bolts is a good practice. Warm engine first..
My wife thinks I overthink my mechanic projects. She is wrong.. Capt Mike

OOPS on the busted bo;lts. Those motors are fairly tuff........you should be ok. The busted bolts can be fixed. Only true way of knowing if there is damage to the rings or internals before taking apart is a compression test and a Leakdown test. With those 2 teats I can tell ya what that motor had for suppwer last night.
