Look for chunky rocks around current with depth changes.
Say it with me...chunky rocks....current.....depth changes..... By depth changes I can mean 1-3 foot drops or greater, but smallmouth in streams and rivers will move shallow if they can just have a little depth and current near by. Also my favorite lure is the Edge Speedfall - a durable senko type lure. I also like spinenrbaits and small finesse jigs some, and flukes too.

When i fish for smallies in small creeks and lakes i like to target dropoffs and rockpiles. I mainly use a jighead and grub (color depending on water). I have had great success fishing grubs.
But i also use leeches on my trip to minnesota, with success. |

Definitely look for a change in current. As stated deeper holes after current are good. Look for larege eddies as well. Like lake fishing, fish cover and structure.

No question. Small buzzbaits. I throw a 3/16oz. Leverage mostly. You may not catch a ton of numbers, but you'll catch the big ones. Throw it over large rocks, layedowns, etc. Especially in shallow water and bring it as close to the structure as possible. Get it moving and buzzing before it hits the water almost.
If you want lots of numbers, I would get some Rebel Craws in various colors and depths. WAR

Yep wareagle, small buzzbaitsfished slowly, and some kind of crawfish crankbait. Crawfish make up 63% of their diet, I read that in Bassmaster.

Whenever i fish for Smallies in creeks and streams I use Rooster tails. But if they are big enough they like crawdads if you have any small ones.

Case plastic's make a bait called the Jack's Worm. This is the weapon of choice for all the Smallie hunters I know. Doubles the catch ratio of Senko's, so I'm told.
