any insight would be great
some of you who responded to a post by wags about the boat we purchased know a lil bit but we have yet anotehr issue.
the original problem has been fixed, and we took the boat twice, started and ran gr8. home battery never got full chared and wouldnt start at end of 2nd day, but human error, not mechanical. so today, everything charged full, plenty of gas, ready to go out and get ready for a tourney this weekend. back it in, turns over like crazy, never fires though. take it bck out, head to marina where they were great helping us, we changed the plugs, and fuel filter, since we didnt know how long that had been since changed b4. still no fire. please give us a lil bit of insite if you have any ideas. guys at marina said ether in the carborator if it fires, probably fuel line issue, which seems impossible since they are all brand new. if no fire, its electrical. the motor is a 150hp mercury. if there is anything that can be explained we could try, please let us know, cant afford much more fixing. you guys have been great helping us in the past, so we look forward to some responses. thx, ken

Well gotta check both then first before we can get an idea. A motor is a motor after all.
First check the spark since that's probably the easiest. Take a plug out put it on the block. Get it positioned so that the electrode is on the motor. Turn the key over and that should tell you if your getting spark. Well I guess checking the fuel is just as easy. At least checking if the carb is getting fuel. Take a can any kind of can. Pull the fuel line off the carburetor and put it in the can. Once again turn the key over and see if any fuel comes out. Should only take two turns or so to get fuel out. Should also be able to pull the air filter off and look in to get some idea. Just to be sure do what I mentioned. |

probably way too simple but did you make sure the kill switch isn't pulled out? nofear got his balls busted a little over having that happen at ky lake but the truth is that it is really easy to do, a mercury is probably easier to have this happen than other brands.
like i said, not trying to insult you with such a simple idea but sometimes it's right infront of our faces and we still can't find the problem.

If all else fails, check the wires to the kill switch, one may have rattled loose.

ok, now this is very interesting.
there was a small oil line that was damaged, the guys at the marina said it shouldnt make a difference, and that it should start, just dont want to run to long that way. so today we were prepared to take it north and have it looked at again. wags decided while he was loading it up, he woud fix the oil line, and try to start it, just for kicks. wham, started. turned off, tried again, and started again. so instead we decided to run to a lake, and see if we can run it and push some fuel lthru the lines. ran fine, but sems to miss a little bit when you try to go to fast. it planes out and goes fine up to 30mph, but then you can hear a slight miss. not complainng, since now we get to fish our tourney this weekend. i just hope it runs good enough so we dont look like idiots. if you can think of anything that might make it slip, any help would be great. ken

hard to describe the slipping Ken is referring to,.....when we accelerate...planes out fine but then you ask for a bit more and the revs go up quickly and the boat doesn't respond to the same rate as the revs. Almost feels like a car when you need trans fluid and you get some slipping in gear. Any idea what could cause this??

You said this thing was carbureted. How old is it? Does it have electronic ignition or a distributor? If a distributor, I would bet it's the problem, and maybe just needs to be tuned up a little. You could also have a bad coil, which can give out a little at high RPM, when it can't produce enough charge to "keep up" with the engine.

my friend that did our tanks and new hoses said could possibly be the fuel pump has taken a lil bit of dirt in there from b4 everything got cleaned out. also said could possibly blow it right out if we run at higher speed a longer time. gonna try it at a tourney tomorrow, and just hope we dont embarrass ourselves.
we just wanna fish, lol, and have some fun, and relax doing it, not worrying if its gonna stat, or what else could happen. thanks for all your ideas on problem. will keep ya posted as to what it might have been.

if she won't go-go
if you aren't using high octane fuel, do so it solve my slow respose problem. also check to see if the inner spline of your prop is in good shape. it may be missing a few teeth causing the prop to slip.

Are ya sayin' tha R's go up but tha boat doesn't go any faster?
