Reel maintenance
I have to admit when it comes to reel maintenance i try but i don't think i am doing a very good job.
I oil my reels at least once or twice each season. But when it comes to grease etc. i am totally lost. I have tried once to take a reel apart and service it and failed badly. I have 2 Revo S reels that both are making a singing type noise. I feel sure it is a bearing going bad. My question is this. I know i need to get bearings but are all the bearings in these reels the same size or do i need to pinpoint the bad bearing to replace? I have some tournament friends who do a Saturday reel servicing party in December. They have told me to just bring all my reels and we will go through them too. I would like to have any parts i need by that time. Plus this will be a great way to help me learn how to take care of my equipment. Any help greatly appreciated. |

Is my assumption correct that the "singing" is happening during the cast? If so, the spool bearings would be my first point of inspection. Rarely I've had centrifugal brake blocks lightly squeal when they had gotten worn. Reel maintenance is a good thing... good luck.

Hey Syd that reel party is a real good idea. Wish there were some guys around here that I could start one with. I can do a very limited amount of reel maintenance if I work hard at it. I tried to go further once with a Citica. It's now in a box all in pieces. I just couldn't get it back together. I even watched a vid on doing the task yourself. One day I'll mail it out to get fixed.
I assume you followed your guide on oiling and applying grease to your reel. That's what I do with mine. Usually works for any noise my reels start making. If you feel it is the bearings it probably would benefit you to get a good set of new ones and replace the old anyways.

If you decide to replace the spool bearings on your Revo S you will want to order two different bearings. The one in the palm side plate is a 3 X 10 X 4mm and the one on the spool is a 5 X 11 X 4mm. You can order them as a set from Boca Bearings PN FR-029C-Y-LD, these are ABEC 5 ceramics with stainless races.
I would strongly suggest removing the bearings you have now, give them a good cleaning in acetone, lightly oil them and give them a try, I think you will be surprised how good they will be after a proper cleaning. One word of caution, if you decide to remove the bearing on the spool, you will need a special tool to remove the pin from the spool shaft, if you fail to use the proper tool there is a good chance you will damage the spool.

If the reel cranks and casts smooth, but makes a squeal , a shriek or a chittering noise during the cast, then it's most likley dry brake tabs and a dry brake ring. It happend to me a lot with my revos. The reel would be fine in the morning then it would just slowly start making a little noise. Add a drop of oil to each brake tab and then use a Qtip soaked with oil to swab the brass brake ring.
If your bearings are bad enough to make noise, then you will most likley feel it during cranking. |

I don't usually oil the brakes but it won't hurt. More importantly, clean the tabs and drum with alcohol to remove dust, oxidation etc. As Tavery suggests, service the stock bearings before committing to replacement.

If you don't oil them and you don't grease them, they will squeal.
