Who Uses Old Reels?
I was just respooling my old Shimano Bantam Promag when I was thinking...
Who still uses old reels? My Promag is great. It's not the most high-tech thing now, but it works well. I also still use my 1976 Abu 6000c for casting spoons, and my Abu Garcia Ambassadeur Lite Plus for cranking, on occasion. Some of those old reels are real brutes. |

hahaha, i am WELL known for using as some people say ANTIQUE reels. pal. had a bantam gold, gave it to a friend out in texas from here. i still have my ABU GARCIAS. got the FIRST mag force, 2nd 3rd and 4th (i think) generations of these reels. gonna send some (when i can afford it) to PRO REEL for overhauling. when i go yard saleing, i look for these reels. and any other brands too. i love mine. although the newer low profile reels are great for arthuritic hands. i still love the old ones too. still use them too. every trip i make i got em all ready to go.

I've got some old greenies still in use but that's as old as I have in the starting lineup. I've got an antique pfluegar levelwind with the silk line still on it. I fished with it one day on the old steel rod, man did that make me thankful for advancements they've made since then!

Those old Curados are somethin else. Bluebasser, I see that you are from Shawnee. What is your home lake? Shawnee isn't too far away. I fish on a private pond, but don't take too many trips far and away. Been to La Cygne once, and wakarusa twice, and a number of smaller ponds.

I use many old Curado Bs, but one of my friends uses mostly old Shimano Lews reels. I don't know how old those are, but they look 20+ years.

Do yall realize that it hasn't been that long ago that any reel that weighed 9.5 or so was considered a feather! Nowadays that feels clunky. Wonder how light they'll be able to make them in the future and still maintain some strength. Will my grandchildren have to have them tethered to their sleeve to keep them from simply floating away?

I had an Uncle in the 60's that was my fishing mentor that was aware of the existance of electric trolling motors and could have easily bought one but insisted on just using a short paddle to "skull" every time he took me. Should have seen his "popeye" right arm.

I have an old Shimano BMP 250 from the 80's. Sent it to Pro Reel as the bearings were bad and he gave it a super tune. Now it is one of my favorite crankbait reels as it is small and has a 5 to something to 1 gear ratio. That was about the highest gear ratio you could get in the middle 80's.

Who remembers when the curados use to be red ? They were my first reels when I started fishing the Red Man circuit.I use the DaiwaTD2 reels plus a bunch of other older reels.I like the round Daiwa Millionaire CV-CVX model reels plus the Shimano Calcutta round reels.I've had newer reels but I don't keep them. The Citica E is the newest reel I own.

There are a ton of older reels that are plenty fishable. Any of the Ambassadeurs and Green Bantams will fish right up there with a lot of the current stuff. A super tuned Curado B is a casting machine.

I've never sold or thrown out a reel. I regularly use my older model Citica and Calcutta.
I also use a Penn 710 Spinfisher that was made before I was born. I've made some modifications to that one though. |

Well, I'm sitting here looking at my casting rods, and all 4 are wearing 4500CBs. So yeah, I've got some old equipment. But these things are sooooo hard to get away from. They WORK.

I use a few older Abu C-3's and C-4's for a few applications. I still love the way they cast. I use them for Northern, Musky and our in common favorite, the bass. I still get great distance with them.I used them alot when I started out. I very rarely backlash with them. I have a few older Curado's that still see service now and then. As long as you take care of a quality reel, it should give you a life time of enjoyment.

i am still antiquated as far as reels go. i still use 5500c's from back in the 70's. you can not wear them out. just put a new worm gear and pawl in when need. clean and oil them as needed and they just keep working. they are a must for vertical fishing. the level wind is an automatic line counter. one time across on a 5500 and that equates to 7 feet of line. no need to be able to see you line on the electronics to tell how deep you are.

I still use a Johnny Morris, which is ten years old and works like new. I use it with braid on my 7'6" frog rod. All I do is maintain it. This is one many said was "junk" ten years ago.
