Revo question
yeah i know a reel question from me.
i have a couple revo's. but i recently got a stx for flippin and pitching..maybe its new and not broke in yet but here is the problem. if i set the reel up for pitching, i get a big backlash if i try roll casting it. if i set the reel up to cast i get a big backlash when i try pitching the bait.any of you revo guys experience this before?? my other revos i use are a chunk and wind settings. this is the first time i have tried to multitask a revo. zooker

Same here. I use my revos for everything from making long hard casts to flipping and I have never had this problem. Maybe Kevins video on basic baitcasting setup will help you

I've been using my new STX this spring strictly for pitchin and have never had a backlash. I'd exchage it as I know you know what your doing. If your having trouble, you must have a lemon.

I had a reel that would slip. I'd make a couple casts and no problem. Then I'd make one with out changing a thing and backlash. I'd check the brake and it would have slipped and was looser than the original setting. I'd tighten it and it would work fine...for a while and then a backlash. Check and see if this is happening.

I'm with everyone else. I've never had any problems with mine (except for blowing the anti reverse bearing up in the s). I've got an s sx stx and a winch on the way. I'd say lemon to. Just out of curiosity what kind of line are you using?

yep braid is pretty much all i use. i did try some berkley fluorocarbon( thought it was junk i might add) and it did some funky stuff on the reel.

That is exactly what the Revo SX HS that I had did. There was no happy medium setting for it so I traded it away and won't buy another. If it's new I would say there is something wrong with it and you should exchange it. If the second one does the same thing then go back to your normal brand.

Zook....just a thought....is this a 2010 STX with the dual brakes?
If it is, maybe some odd combination of the brakes is causing this?

I have the 2 STX and they work perfect. It new ones dual brakes. Centrifical and magnetic when I first got I was having the same problem. Wasn't used to having 2 types of brakes. Play with them and you will get the settings the way you want. I have one with setting and the other with a different setting.
On both reels I only have 1 centrifical brake on. But the magnetic changes I have one 3/4 of the way off. And the other 1/2 way. When I change lures I adjust the magntic brake and spool tension knob to get it correct |

Brakes and line
This could be a dual brake issue or bad string or both. I would maybe think about the easy fix first, check that both brakes are working correctly and then just see by chance if the line is bad. I know braid is consistent but it could be. I would also just do a quick over on the rod. I had a situation where I just knew I had an reel issue but after replacing the reel the very next reel did the same thing. Turns out the rod had a ever so slight bent mid eye and bingo, backlash problem solved.

Zooker, Put a 1/2 oz. weight on it and cast the daylights out of it, even in the yard if neccessary. What I think is wrong is you have excessive lube in the bearings. It'll usually take about a 1/2 hour of casting and reeling before you see it work the excess lube out of the reel.
One thing to know is at what point the reel backlashes. If it backlashes at the beginning of the cast, adjust the braking settings to a higher setting. If it backlashes at the end of the cast, your spool tension knob needs to be adjusted tighter. Sporatic casts results usually means excessive lube in the reel or reel component malfunction. I hope this helps. |
