So I tried my hand at Two Toning a Sexy Shad
So last night I got bored and thought I'd try my hand at Throwing a Two Tone color on a Sexy Shad Swimming Jig. I gotta say so myself... I think it looks pretty darn sweet!

Nice Job, what hook are you putting in your jig?

I use the Mustad Hooks, 32886BLN in a 3/0 with Size 2 Eyes.
I'm going to mess around with some more painting this weekend, I was thinking with just going with a White Base on ALL of the Swimming Jigs and then Two Tone it with the Color of Skirts I put together. So for a Bream / Bluegill Swimming Jig, go with a White Head and two tone it with some Watermelon with some dashes of blue and firecracker. We'll see how it goes, that's the cool thing about Custom Jigs, they're never exactly alike.

Nice looking jigs and a very good job putting them together. If I may be constructive, I would put the darker color on the top of the jig head. You might try some with a thinner skirt, I fish allot of swimjigs and many times I get more strikes when the skirt is thin, or I cut some of the material out of the inside, seems to make the skirt flare a little easier.
I like the 30 degree hook, I think your def. on your way to making some very nice jigs.

Im with Tavery on the idea of putting the blue on top. Other than that I think it looks great!

Tav- please explain more on this, hell it may catch me more fish. The Jig swims Weedguard pointing up. The Bass is below the Jig looking towards the surface. With those perameters, how is the blue on the wrong side? Am I fishing this thing wrong?

My thoughts are that when you use a swimjig you are primarily imitating a bait fish. If you look at fish in general, they are usually darkest on the back and then gradually get lighter towards the belly.
This is kind of what I was thinking, it probably makes no difference, and as long as you are happy, that is all that matters. Good Luck

This was a shot taken before I had finished the jig. The eyes were done with black power paint, but eventually covered up with 3D "angry" eyes.
Fish are generally darker on their backs. But there isn't any reason why the darker color on bottom wouldn't work. Just look at some of the colors we use on other baits that look nothing like fish at all. BB

This discussion on color got me to thinking. I agree with whats been said about the darker color being towards to the top of the lure, any lure for that matter. But have you guys ever fished a swim jig in low light conditions, such as predawn and after dusk? Perhaps, a totally dark colored swim jig would be ideal. By the way, I do like the look of the jig in the photo. I have no doubt it's going to work well.

It makes sense to me now, funny, took me sitting here picturing a fish swimming to realize that even though I had the right intention it doesn't make fish sense. I have no doubt that it's still going to work though, hehe.
Dang you guys, now I gotta make me another one tonight!

Try the 2 out side by side and see which produces better. I would be curious to know if it makes a difference. In theory, the bass would see the 1st one better because they look up from the bottom and they see the dark blue bottom against the light blue sky and vice versa,
