If it moves, a bass will hit it!
I made that statement at a bass club meeting about 25 years ago and someone stood up and said, "Prove it"!!
So, this is what I did. I took a small corn cob, about 4" long, dried it and split it down the middle with a modeling saw. I formed a piece of stainless wire to hold two hooks along the bottom and an eye to tie the line to. I then placed this into the cob and glued the two halves together. After drying over night, I put split rings and hooks on it. I did not carve on it or paint it. I took it out with him and caught three bass on it in about an hour one morning. It did have a very unusual swishing sound when pulled across the water because of the roughness of the cob! I have said it before, and I will say it again, Bass are a lot like cats in that you can play with a cat without the thing on the string looking like a mouse. If it looks like something to eat and because they do not have arms they will try it and if it isn't they will spit it out! Tackle has been way over blown in trying to catch the fisherman. You can get by with only about three colors of anything, light meadium and dark. But, even I have 10 colors of everything!

I saw a show one time. This guy had his own little pond stocked with bass. His claim was that bass will try to eat ANYTHING. Until they learn not to. He claimed he was on his dock one day, his sunglasses fell off and a bass tried eating them

i agree with this statement oreeeeeygun....to a piont though. i ahve stated many times that a bass will eat anything on a given day. our job as fishermen/women is to find out exactly what they want on that certain day, hour, minute. if we all remember how the ol spoon bait was invented, it proves the point. the inventer was eating a snack or something, dropped his spoon in the water, and as it was going down he saw a bass trying to get it. so he went home and cut off the handle of a spoon, rigged up a hook. and there ya go, the first spoon jig. true story.

If they will hit anything then how come I got so many cranks that never have been bit? LOL actually when they are hitting like mad, its a good time to get out some lures that you've never had a hit on and see if they will work, its a confidence builder after one finally hits it.

My statement was a general one, we all know that a real bait will work much better and matching the hatch is normally the best way to go.
I don't have my tackle box full of corn cobs if that's what you mean!!!! I wonder what ever happened to that thing??????????????

Bass are oppurtunistic eaters... if it moves and it seems easy to eat they WILL eat it...
but you can catch bass on anything moves definatley if you are on a pond.... that is how bill dance and other people sell all those random baits, they go on a stocked pond and boom they catch fish....... its how they sell paid programming (on TV) baits

True, ponds or areas that are not fished change the game of fishing. I have struggled a little recently fishing the rivers and bay, but I found a local pond that is good for 4 or 5 fish in 10 minutes at will. The difference is where I am fishing.

I had a friend that went to one of those good Mexico bass lakes back in the 70s where they catch a hundred a day or so. He tied a treble hook on a beer opener, aka church key, and caught them just as good as he did on store bought lures.

I had this same idea once just to prove the same point, I wanted to use a tampon. Rig some wire thru it, add some hooks and work it as a topwater. Never did it but glad someone took the piont to town on a real test and proved it.

The Daredevil Spoon was born one day that when it´s inventor dropped overboard a regular and ordinary spoon by accident and saw a fish hitting it as it fluttered down to the bottom.

If it moves, a bass will hit it!
And it doesn't have to move for bass to eat. I've seen them eat leftover pancakes and eggs. I think they preferred the maple syrup but I can't be sure. |
