you should be fine. A lot of people use a fly rod in a kayak and they seem to do pretty good. I would only carry what I needed to though. I wouldnt carry my whole tackle box. Maybe put a few things in a zip lock bag.

I have a couple questions for you bassassinator. What is the water temperature where your fishing? What kind of structure do you have to fish around?

Most kayaks will have a few rod holders. They tilt the rods out away from the center of the yak. If you have that, just watch for catching it on the cast.
A small backpack should be able to fit everything. If you don't want it to get wet, put it in a ziplock. (Phone, keys, wallet) Leave ait in the ziplock to help it float if need be. In a yak or canoe, I put this bag in a cargo pocket of my shorts. Secure everything to the kayak. Small bungies work well for this.

i have a sot yak..if your 7 foot rod has a long handle it'll be a pain in the but.. the mid handled rods are really the way to go in a yak..i tote 4 rods at atime in my yak..a milk crate is a great thing..

Kayak fishing is currently the fastest growing sector of the sport fishing industry. Manufacturers are designing and making kayaks specifically for fishing applications.
I now have a Stealth 14 by Malibu Kayaks, but I started out fishing in a very inexpensive Perception 12' Sundance recreation kayak about six years ago. It changed my life as a bass angler. Yes, by all means, you can fish from a kayak. I have several friends who fly fish from their kayaks. I prefer kayak fishing to any other method of fishing. |
