I use two different brands mostly. Owner centering pin and Zoom frog hooks. I really like the centering pin because they are easy to start into the head of the toad. I tried the hackney double hooks and they were to big for the horny toad. If I don't have or run out of the above I like the Gammy Skip Gap also.

5/0 Owner Twistlocks. Great hooks. Sharp, and extremely tough.

Bassinbob is right on.
I've been fishing ribbits and sizmic toads for along time. The ribbits are so versital so don't be afraid to try different thinks other than buzzing them. Great for pulling across pads and hesitate on pad and slowly pull to edge and just let it sink free fall.Amazing results! Especially on isolated clumps of pads. Centering pins and wide gap are a must have. I have no clue what the Hacknies fit. I tried them too. Didn't even fit the Bull Ribbits well. I used wide gaps without centering pins and they work but tend to tear up frogs easier than with centering pins. I have tried but will never use wieghted frog hooks again. Now thats just me but to me it's effect on frog unless flat out burning it back is just the opposite reason your fishing the frog for in the first place. Mend it or super glue of some sort works wonders on the frog nose where pin goes in. A lot of people use 4/0 and 5/0 but I prefer 3/0. Sizmic has a frog hook that is alot thinner than Hackney's but ususlly only can be found in 4/0 and 5/0 so I haven't tried them. They do make a 3/0, just hard to find. Like I said, most people are into larger hooks.

Screwlock wide gap from a 3/0 to a 5/0 depending upon the size and thickness of bait im using.Prefer horny toads to ribbets and most discriminating bass here do as well.
I dont use glue use my lighter to mend the nose. |

I use 4/0 EWG hooks on anything from my favorite Culprit frogs to Ribbits to Horny toads. The bass love them, and I don't miss too many of them. I think that a single hook works just fine.

Screwlock with a centering pin is the way to go IMO. I used to use regular EWG's and they will work fine but the screwlock makes all the difference to me. With the screw lock I get more use out of each frog. For size I use a 4/0 on a regular ribbit and a 6/0 on a bull... 4/0 on a horney toad too. Plus I've started putting a trailer hook on in situation where getting hung up isn't an issue.

I fish mostly Horny Toads and Ribbit Frogs. I like a plain 5/0 EWG hook. I might need to try the screw-lock hooks with the centering-pin? I've tried the Horny Toad brand hooks with the screw-locks; they seemed to tear up the nose just as bad if not worse than a plain hook. A centering pin with a screw-lock might help.
In my experience, I've got better hook-up ratios with a bigger hook; that's why I use a 5/0 and not a 3/0 or 4/0. I have had very good hook-up ratios with ribbit frogs using a 5/0 EWG hook and see no reason to try the Stanley double hook that they make for their frogs. |
