Line Twisting
I have a basic ultra-light spinning rod & reel. Both purchased at Gander Mt.
I have been experiencing line twisting... any time I give the line slack the line will twist itself up. I've tried to just let the line unravel behind the boat. Id let all the line go out with nothing on the end... no swivel... then id reel it back up with tension on it.. then after a few casts the line would go back to being all twisted. I've tried getting a new reel and tried changing the line numerous times... My father seems to think it does it because its the way I cast.... I dont know about that... Has anyone else experienced severe line twisting with their rod & reel? To better explain if you tried fishing for carp on the bottom and went to put a bolber on your line.. When you would pull the line down and put the bolber on it would spin around and twist so that it would be impossible to reel it in if you had a hit. I have no idea why this is happening... Thanks Chris |

I doubt your casting has anything to do with it. Your biggest problem IMO is the mono, but beyond that, the Ultra Lites have very small spools. Therefor they also wrap smaller, making more wraps per foor of line than a standard or large diameter spool does. Also the smaller diameter lines are easier to get line twist also. Take the spool off, set it in warm water for about 5 minutes. Put it back on the pole, and tie the end to a tree. Then pull with some tention, and then as you are reeling it in. put some Reel Magic, or KVD's stuff on a rag, and wind it through the wet rag(thanks Mac 10). Should help you out some. And keep spraying the Reel Magic occasionally on it.

My experience has always been that line twist on a spinning reel is usually caused by the type of lure that you're using. I used to use a spinning reel years ago but gave them up just for that reason. I only use baitcasters now. A lure such as a fluke or even worse a Slugo without weight will raise havoc with your line because they will continuously spin on retrieve. At least this has always been my experience. Not a solution but an observation. One other possibility. Are you spooling the new line on correctly?

Thanks
Im pretty sure im spooling it on right... explain if you can how too if you really think thats the problem.
One time I put on new line and used crankbaits only with a swivel so the line wouldnt twist... but the problem came back after a few outings...even with the swivel... Thanks for all the advice... I'll try it Chris |

I Used To Do A Lot Of Skip Casting With A Spinning Reel And When The Lure Would Hit The Water It Would Spin And Roll. Thats When I Noticed It Was The Worst.

You are doing the right thing for twist by letting it trail behind the boat. The other thing I would suggest is to close the bait by hand rather than reeling it closed. That might help.

I don't think the line is the problem-it is the reel. By nature spinning reels cause line twist. Since you are using an ultralight, do you ever reel while the drag is pulling? Easy to do with an ultralight, and that will twist the line big time.

I mean any time you hear the drag, like if you snag a stick and are reeling but no line is coming in. If you are reeling, hearing the noise the drag makes, and no line is coming in you are just twisting the line. That's one of the disadvantages when using ultralight.

Ok so try to reduce the amount of drag used.... Well I cant aviod it completly but ill try not to pull snags out as much as to move the boat on the other side of them... from shore its a diff issue... do you think this is the main contributor to my problems?
Should I keep an extra spool filled with line when I go out? Chris |

yes extra spools aint just for looking at. it may be the line what kind are you using ? no reb ment add more drag. when you are reeling in a fish never reel against the drag . it will eat it up over time. what pound test is your line a heavy line on a ultra light can cause major tangles. every body else has covered the rest.

Sounds like it to me. You can't eliminate it all, but if you cut down on reeling while pulling drag it ought to cut down on the problem.

There are 2 methods (that I'm aware of) when spooling a spinning reel. 1 is to lay your spool of line on the floor with label up. Run it through your guides and tie it to your spool. Pull your rod tip up about 3 feet from the spool and crank in a few feet of line then dip the rod tip back down to the spool. If the line twists inward, flip the the spool over with label down and try the same this way. Daiwa will tell you on their site to never load this way. They suggest the common method of pencil through spool and wind onto reel with pressure but make sure the line is feeding off the spool in a "clockwise" turn. Just some ideas. BassPro sells a Daiwa Spinmatic reel that Daiwa claims prevents line twist. Don't know anything about them personally.

Your problem has the characteristics of incorrect spooling, but you think you're spooling correctly. Follow the reel's instructions for spooling. Some reels with anti-twist line rollers instruct to spool like a baitcaster, that is, with the supply spool held vertically with a pencil through the center. Otherwise, the supply spool should be flat on the floor with the line coming off the opposite way that it goes on the reel spool when viewed from the front of the reel. Every reel I've seen spools on clockwise, so the line should come off the supply spool counterclockwise. DO NOT follow advice that says to lay the supply spool down based on which way the label is facing.
I have owned perhaps 25 spinning reels. Some are outstanding at controlling twist, while there have been others that twist line regardless of what I did. These latter ones are good for the garbage can and not much else. Some other tips in addition to those already given are to use a limp, low memory, easy-handling, spinning-friendly line and to use a relatively small diameter line on a relatively large diameter spool. Good luck.

Im very sorry but im mistaken about my rod... it isnt an Ultra-Light... Just a Light rod
But that shouldnt take away from most of these solutions Ive used anywhere from 6-10lb test on it experiementing and numerous brands. Silver Thread, Triline, etc... I heard that Stren had a good type of line out. Well thanks for all the advice i will try it Chris |

internal weighted tube baits will twist any line.close the bail by hand and remove all slack before you reel it so you don't put loops in the line.also use cajun red cast!!!i get less line twist with cajun red cast than any other.swivels may be needed with certain lures like internal weighted tubes.

If you get a superline, then your line twist problem should go away. If you are using a swivel, then that should also help. Mono is notorious for line twsit. I prefer Fireline on my spinning reels, but you have to decide what you like. Fireline is not cheap. One other thing, are you possibly overspooling your reel?
