Black bass, would that be your largemouth or smallmouth, because they both fall into the black bass family? I'm asking because the lures and their presentations vary form largemouth to smallmouth. Also what will the conditions be, weather, temp water temp, water clarity, and such variables.

Throw a ratltrap around the dam. If it's as beastly hot out there as it is round here, the bait, and also the bass will be up in the tailwater, where the water is cooler and more oxygenated. You probably have shad in the area, so a ratltrap is a very safe bet.

Wecome to the forum!
Always glad to see a fellow Texn join! Haven't fished Calaveras but once in the past umpteen years. Look for the coolest water you can find-between the heat of the summer and the discharge from the power plant that water ought to be hot. If it was me I'd keep driving south and go to Choke Canyon.
