Trolling motor help
I have a Minn Kota 555T. I believe it is a 1993. Worked great until this season. I have all 5 speeds, they just aren't much. Need to use 5 most of the time. (and that is not great) I used to be able to keep it on about 3 and adjust from there depending on the situation. Cleaning the brushes and lower unit has been suggested. Any ideas? Probably would like to try this myself. Any suggestions?

I'm probably not right, but you check the battery, it could be on its last leg.

Cleaning the armature and the brushes will help out buut I hate to tell ya.......if its lost that much power it rreally is time to replace. Not only are the brushes and armature whereing out but bearings and bushings as well and you stated you had to run at a level of threee to move the boat.......................you need one that will move the boat on the loweest setting.

I am going to start with the brushes. Buying a new one isn't an option at this time. I start at a 3 as a rule. If I only needed to creep, 1 would work.
Are the brushes and armature cleaned or replaced? I believe there are seals to be replaced as well? |

Yes there are seals. You clean the armature and replace the brushes. Just like a old starter if ya ever done that. In fact your gonna say Hmmph this aint nuttin but a starter motor when in actuality thats what it is. Get the correct o rings to reseal and MAKE SURE they go in correctly. Any water intrusin and the motor WILL BE TOAST. I know its ugly but after cleaning throughly and replacing the oring just for safe sake I put a thin layer of silicone around the joining halves both when assembling and after together.
