boat buying RANT!
ok, as ya'll know my borther and i were (i still am) going to restore the 82 cajun's transom as well as the over all condition of the boat. but my brother is wanting to buy a good rig NOW. so we have been POURING over craigslist among other sites trying to find them a nice dependable boat. my nephew is having his first high school tourny as i type. we were hoping to have a boat for them ready for the next tourny.
andway, my brother found a nice skeeter in cleveland tenn. called the guy, he said it was listed for $3500.00 but if someone showed up with 3 grand they would probably take it home. this was a 17'6" skeeter, 150 johnson WITH a brand new power head. 2 gps fish finders, 70# troller. ready for the water. he was going back to golfing and jsut wanted to get it out the way. brother asked me to call since i have owned a few boats and lived closer (bout 1 hr away) to set up a time to go check it out. i called, heard it run (with muffs on ) over the phone. he is a sales manager for a car dealership in chattanooga he said. motor ran like a top. i told him we would be there TODAY and if it was all true we would buy the rig. called him again on thursday, he said someone was on the way and would probably buy it also. i ASKED him if this person DID buy the boat, please call me so i wouldn't waste a trip. he said ok, no problem. called him yesterday.........6 TIMES!! no answer, voice message only. n returned calls, no nothing. talk about PISSED!!! if oyu sell something, at least have the common decentcy to call someone and let them know so they don't waste a trip and a tank of gas (which is climbing in price everyday). GGGEEEEEZZZZZ!! meanwhile, i ran up on ANOTHER rig. LOCAL IN MY TOWN! 18' procraft, 175 black max merc, troller, 1 working fish finder. needed cleaned up really bad. the owner had his EMPLOYEE put 2, not 1 but TOW copy machine signs on front and rear chairs that read BASS BOAT $2500.00. so i stopped and talked to the OWNER. he said ok, i'll le tit go for the amount posted but i really was wanting 3 grand. i calle dbrother, he calls bank. he is ok'd for the $2500.00 and has $500 to get it in shape cause it needed a tune up and new impeller and junk in the foot. because the boat SAT in water all last year without being ran. we put muffs on it and ran it. so i knew what needed to be done. so i told the guy ok, brother would be up SUNDAY to pay him and take the boat. he said ok, he would send me an EMAIL with all the numbers for brothers bank. no email. no phone call. this was supposed to happen THURSDAY NIGHT. and i was trying to get ahold of the guy in tenn at the same time jsut to cover my bases. so yesterday orning at 8 am SHARP i get a phone call. FORM HIS EMPLOYEE!! NOT THE OWNER HISSELF.......HIS DAM EMPLOYEE!!! i say to myself, this is not good. and iw as right. the "employee tells me the owner pulled his paperwork and finds that he paid more than he thought he did and was gonna let us have it for ANOTHER $500.00. and if we didn't want to pay, he would wait a while and then put $3500.00 on the boat and sell it. thw owner didn't call me, i told his "employee" that i didn't do crap (nice word for what i was REALLY saying) like that. if i made a mistake, MY FAULT, MY LOSS. told the "employee" that the OWNER needed to call me, not have him do his dirty work for him. otherwise i didn't want the boat. no phone call. i waited.........waited and FUMING. an hour went by. got so fed up i said @#$% &*!!! and i called the OWNER. we exchanged a few words, mostly me telling him he made a LEGAL verbal contract andif i had the money. i would sue him and take his wifes mercedes with the rig as well as his pontoon boat. but of course he is a big wig in town, and has "friends". i told him that i hope he had a nice life, and if he can sleep knowing that he made the mistake fine by me. but he had no respect as a man. his word is nothing. and i WILL tell everyone i know what he did. already told the gossep folks around work. so i know it will get around quickly. may not have a job come monday, but that's fine too. i really let this guy have it. his wife even came out and stood jsut outside the door of their business watching and listening. her head was hanging down too. she knew what he idd was wrong. and these are supposed to be pillers of the town. LEADERS OF THE COMMUNITY. but after a nights sleep, i am ok now. brother found a couple of other rigs he is going to look at tomorrow. and i found ONE more in town. but brother can't get enough money form the bank to get it. i sure wish he could. it is a beauty. but ain't gonna be able to get it. ok, my rant is over. ya'll take this as a leson folks. their are osme really nasty, dirty folks out there. so be careful when trying to buy a boat.

Man John, that all really sucks big time. I don't blame you for being so upset! Sounds like that "piller to the community" is really a piece of ****! And guys like him simply don't care, so it's better to simply walk away and never have anything to do with him anymore. I'm sure the right rig will show up soon. Just keep the faith brother. And I'd still finish restoring the old Cajun. You could maybe sell it to help pay for the newer rig.

John, we all know that most boat owners are delusional about what their used boat's market value really is. They'll put it up for sale without any real intention of selling it unless they find someone as delusional as they are. If some guy wants to jerk you around, don't buy his boat. Maybe give him a piece of your mind as a little bonus. You did the right thing.

He won't LET you crank it before you buy? He wants you to hand him $2500 and drive off? No chance, not at all, no. Tell him you get to AT LEAST put the muffs on it and get it to crank and idle, or no deal. I wouldn't waste any more time talking to that guy if he doesn't ok that. If he says no, I'd just laugh and hang up the phone while I was still laughing, or if you're there in person, laugh while walking back to your truck shaking your head. Open the door, look back at him, give him one more big belly laugh, get it and drive off.

John there are a lot of boats out there in that price range. Most all of them will be old enough that they could use a little restoration somewhere but the bottom line is that you all will find a solid boat that takes minimal work to get it on the water. Hang in there.
