Really nice baitcaster.
Hey guys,
My dad and I have recently got into bass fishing again (after we sold our boat a few years ago, figures, eh?) and he needs some new gear. He bought a shimano rod/reel combo for about 200 at BPS, and frankly, it isn't cutting it. He wants to step up to some of the best (money isn't an option). We need some good opinions, rather than the shimano guys at BPS putting everything else down. He was looking at the quantam PT energy or something like that, but a good friend of ours says it breaks. What we fish for is peacock bass, and largemouth bass. He uses buzzbaits, spinnerbais, crankbaits, and jerkbaits. He needs something with a decent retreive, that would work best for everything. He has a few G-Loomis rods to put the new reel on, so that isn't an issue either. Any help would be much appreciated. -Jared. And once agian, money is no issue. Oh, and he's a really good fisherman, but he just isn't up to date with the latest and greatest.

I would go with a quantum PT burner reel. It would work great for spinners/buzzbaits especially.

Daiwa Team Advantage Performance Tuned 153HST. AWESOME reel. I have several and absolutely love them.

You can find any reel that someone will say breaks, or doesn't like because of this or that, if money isn't an object, go pick up the top of the line reels from each brand, and come back and tell us.

Haha, money is no object for one real.
I don't think my dad really wants to go out and spend 2k on reels, just to use maybe two of them.

Well I'm a Shimano fan myself, but the faster reels they have aren't in the Top of the line makeup. If money is not a issue, then perhaps he needs a new long lost son rotfl. Seriously there are some new electronic baitcasters on the market but again if you want a super speed retrieve they usually aren't in that category. Now if he can deal with a little slower speed, then there are lot's of nice reels out there. Pig-N-Jig from this site probably knows more about reels than most people ever will. However he seems to always give me a hard time about Shimano's being overpriced LOL. He did recently buy one though. Perhaps a PM to him might help.

He doesn't want an electronic, but I think he is going with a Daiwa.
We looked at the quantam tour edition, and the sideplate seemed plastic.

All i can say is , I always used Shimano's till last spring and i deciced to give Pflueger a try. And all i can say is i'm replacing my Shimano's this year, if that tells you anything. As of yet, i've had no problems. And i don't winterize my boat. If you know what i mean. Good luck on which ever one you buy.And good fishing.

I've got some Shimano reels, and they are pretty nice, a Curado and a Chronarch SF, as well as a Scorpion 1000 MG, the onyl thing I dislike about them (not including the Scorpion), is the lack of external cast control.
I don't even know why, really, as I pretty much set it, and forget about it, but I like it being there |

I second that, I've never had any problems with my shimano's. I have several oldies I am still throwing today, and granted, they may make some noise now that they didn't used too....they work just fine. Maybe I should get them cleaned by now..they are afterall over 5 years old..

Bet, took me about 6 to get mine cleaned, that guy did excellent work! Upgraded the bearings to ceramic, and got the work done via horse trading, he liked my jigs, I liked my reels working right Definately get them cleaned, makes a huge difference!

To each his own, I just find it easier to use the shimano's...I tried the Viento, but couldn't cast it as clean and easy as I could my Chronarch.... Now ifin I had money to burn, I would get and try a few of everything and then make up my mind, as it is now, I will stick with Shimanos. I may try a Pfluger someday, again...I may..... |

bet and i bought a viento .....took em out all excited.....the next morning....we were back at bps trading them in.....i found them to be a large disappointment.....the manager of the fishing department gave bet and i grief about bringing them back and they weren't in the box....but you know....we walked out with new shimano's and were smilin all the way.....i felt that the twitching bar was more a hinderance than a help.....i wasn't real impressed with the breaking system either....but you know i think that would be an excellent reel for someone that has trouble with arthritis in the hands maybe.....

For the price you cant beat the new citica. IMO the closest thing to the old green curado that was touched by the hand of God himself.
