Weekly Lake Fork Report From Guide Jim Reaneau

Well, it is hard to believe we were in tee shirts yesterday and catching bass right and left. The fish were reacting to the approaching front. We caught all our fish on lipless crank baits from one area about 100 yards long. All this action will vanish as the temp has dropped to the low 30s to the upper 20s. WELCOME to TEXAS in the winter. I remember one year it was 70 degrees at 7 am and by noon we had 4 inches of snow on the ground. The water temp in most areas yesterday was upper fifties to the low sixties. We found the fish about half way back in a creek. They were holding close to wood with grass. I tried several different baits and the lipless crank bank was the only thing they would hit. This will be the pattern soon. The lipless crank bait will tied on one of my rods from now till the end of March. There will be days where you may not get a bite if you don’t throw one of these baits. The wind was a factor yesterday and it was hard to get around and when you got there it was hard to stay. The wind held me off several of my deep spots. But the ones I could fish there was no fish there. The fish just seemed to be shallow. The barometric pressure from the front was the controlling factor. The bite was hot till lunch and then it went to ground. I moved to another area of the lake and tried several creeks like the one we were in that morning and had no luck. I probably should have gone back to the original area and fished there, but my customer wanted to try some deep water and he had never fished a jigging spoon so I was trying to show him another tool for his fishing arsenal. This weekend maybe tough but again with this front moving through so quickly and the sun coming out the fishing may rebound faster than I think. The pockets where the wind didn’t blow across may hold the water temp or only have a slight drop. I would still work a lipless crank bait over and around the grass.
Slow falling weightless Lake Fork Tackle Zig Zag’s, Ring Fries, and Wave Worm Tiki Sticks fished over and around the grass may be another good pattern till the water temps gets back up.
I have December dates open if you want to give some winter fishing a try. A guided fishing trip is a good Christmas gift and I can send you a gift certificate for that special someone to put under the tree.
