Jerkbaits
I just got back from the "Ultimate Fishing Show" in Novi, MI. The only seminar I went to was a jerkbait one put on by Don Watts.
Pretty good information. The only ones he uses are these in color 14 or 18, I can't tell from the picture. He went over key topics such as his retrieve which he only jerks on slack line and varies it. Basically it is a "walk the dog" but underwater retrieve and vary the amount of jerks between taking up the slack. Also in water over a few feet he uses Suspenstrips to get the nose to dive a little bit. His retrieve is constant, not much time letting it suspend so the weights let the nose dive since he wraps them longitudinally around just behind the bill. He changes the front hook out for a red Gammy and adds a mylar skirt to the rear hook or puts on a feathered hook. Up until June around here he fishes open water flats with it. After the spawn he runs parallel to the outside of weedlines. Also in later summer he uses them a lot around docks, rip-rap, and his favorite steel seawalls. Always he fishes these parallel to the structure, always. He keeps 3 rods rigged. One for straight retrieves, one for left, and one for right. The directional ones he bends the eyelet in the bait slightly so that when jerked it is always tracking that direction. This is useful to maintain contact when bouncing it off of structure. This is basically the only bait he uses year round. He uses a 6'6" M Setyr rod, 14lb. Fireline, and a Quantum PT (I forget which one) reel with an ultra low profile to be comfortable all day. After this was a KVD seminar but it was so packed I couldn't even hear what he said so I left. |

bender,
in the midwest ask around, I live hear and the bread and butter color is silverside, black back and orange belly... i own all the colors of rogues, so don't get me wrong, you can match the color by water clarity, but day in and out for bass and walleyes in oHIo the color prefered is black, silver, orange. Get ya one and see if they work for ya! |

I've only fished my x-rap once, for abou an hour. Caught nothing, but really like the action of it. Hope to use it more this year. I find that some of the older baits (rapalas, smithwicks etc) are hard to beat.

I had decent success with X-Raps last year earlier in the season, but I stopped using them in the summer. He said the reason he doesn't use Lucky Crafts are they are too expensive when he loses about 50 a year due to pike mostly. He likes a 5 1/2" one and it looks like the only X-Rap that big is the saltwater one. I happen to have a BPS gift card, so I guess I will get some more Rogues. I will try that color JB, thanks!
Zooker, most of the lakes up here are very clear. There is only one that I fish that has stained water since it has an old river running through it. Stupid fishing show, now I am looking at a new boat. |

I suspend dot the tails on my Rogues, usually 2 dots per bait acheives how I want the bait to fish.I want them to sit suspended and rise slowly and level in the water, not nose down.as they do right out of the package.I use a 5 1/2" super suspending rogues in avocado shad which BPS doesn't carry.I also like the Mark Menendez rogues which are 4 1/2" long. One of my favorite baits in the early Spring is a Rapala Suspending Husky Jerk. In real clear water I have better luck on silver with a blue back. When the water temps are in the low 50's I simpley pull it 18"-24" at a time. Not too quick a jerk. I'll pause it for 2-5 sceonds and pull/jerk it again. I'll vary this until I figure out the length of pull and speed they like. I don't usually "walk the dog" with it in early Spring. This has worked well for me over the years (mainly in clearer water).

Ahh! a thread that speaks my kind of language!! I LOVE my jerkbaits and use them whenever i go on a fishing trip. My all round favourite lure is my Kevin Van Dam Wild Shiner Jerkbait in baby bass. I use it all the time, especially when its spawning season. (this is because most of the time fish ARE NOT looking for something to eat, they wanna protect their nests! and what better way to catch a bass than by annoying the SH*T outa him and getting an aggressive strike due to the fishes anger?) X-raps are also great! When sight fishing I have found that if a bass is only SLIGHTLY interessted in a jerkbait, but doesn't take it, you can cast past him and reel in a blistering speed (Try get it about a hand length infront of his face) and they will usually quickly inhale it. It's hard to see them do this, but they will be hooked because of the speed that you reeled in. Experiment with as many retrieves as you can, and be original! Try lifting your rod tip up high and barely reel in and watch how your floating jerkbait's head is cm's under the water and his tail is causing a disturbance on the surface. These lures are absolutely DEADLY.
