Coyote tracks
I'm curious. Is there anyway to tell the difference between regular dog tracks and coyote tracks? The reason I'm asking is they have a ton of coyotes on fort bragg and I only live a couple miles from the base. Never seen one come around here, but I think I saw one a week or so ago. He wouldn't give me a chance to get a good look at him, but I do think that's what he was. Today I found some tracks in my garden just a few feet from my house. I'm wondering if I might be getting ready to have a problem with them getting in my trash or worse, there are kids around here from time to time. I'd appreciate any info from some of you guys that might of had more experiance with them.

From my experience with coyotes, I believe that they have a slightly narrower track than a dog and you should be able to clearly identify two of it's longest nails in the print... I once had two circling my house for about three nights in a row after I transported some rotten moose meat from one of my chest freezers that had broken down, as we were loading it on the truck blood leaked out of the freezer and made a mess of things in my driveway..there was a few inches of snow on the ground so it made it easy to tell what they were... more importantly, if they are coyotes (which are everywhere nowadays) I would be more concerned why they are coming around, there can only be two reasons, food & water. I have witnessed coyotes take down deer many times in the woods & try to make it a priority to get out during every coyote season and smoke as many as possible.

They were more narrow toward the back than most dog tracks I've seen and it was not a manacured dog if it was a dog. There were three claws and the inside two were set deeper in the dirt.
I think I'll get some critter cams just to see what kinda varmin I do have roaming around the place. We do tend to throw our scraps out to the ferril cats so I imagine that could bring them up. Thanks for the info guys. |

Set up a blind or such, hang a couple raw chicken nearby, and wait. If any coyotes show up, shoot 'em.

I'm afraid I'm in the city limits, (%#@%$ anaxation) so the first option is out, and second is probably a bad idea. I wonder how hard it would be to nail one of those bad boys with a bow. But i only saw one set of tracks so maybe it's just a dog. Not fond of having a stray dog running round the property either.

about a week ago my brother headed outside looking for his tackle box , he ended up by where my dad keeps the tractors and was making a hell of a raquet trying to find it. anyway long story short he heard a growling and moved the flashlight in a slow arc to find about eight coyotes in the area , well from what my dad told me it was quite the picture to see him running from the woods screaming like a little girl telling everyone to get in the house . anyway my dad got some left over chicken and steak bones and soaked them in antifreeze and left them out near the tractors

Probably be hard to hit with a bow. And I don't like poison, poison kills everything, dogs included. I'd set up with a .22 and a maglite at night, and pop 'em in the head. Havahart's work pretty good too...

i'm not a big fan of the poison approach either but my parents live in a fairly remote area and none of the neighbors let their dogs roaa because coyotes have attacked and killed them , but they are still not allowed to shoot them because of town ordinances .

There's a problem with a 22, theres quite a few apartment complexes that have built up in the past few years. And with that comes a lot of kids that like to explore the woods. Not to mention some grown people who seem not to see anything wrong with walking through, or having keggers on someone elses property. Don't want a stray bullet to catch one of them.
Now that i think about it, maybe a few coyote would solve that little problem. To be honest, I couldn't care less if they partied all they wanted back in the woods if they'd clean up their mess and not come up to the house and sheds poking around. Guess I'm having the change of life. Going from a party all night dude to a grumpy old fart. |

coyote track the two middle toenails point inward towards each other and on domestic dogs the point straight ahead to outward.
