Typically along with length, power and action are used to help make a decision on what a particular rod may excel at. If you can provide that information it may help with educated answers.
For crankbait fishing, there are times when both longer and shorter rods may excel. Longer rods are good for long casting deeper diving cranks to provide them an opportunity to reach max depth and remain in the that zone for longer periods of time. Shorter rods offer increased accuracy with casting and make good rods for casting med and shallow running cranks to cover. Again, use power and action, along with length to help determine what rod is best for your particular fishing style and need.
