"the reel story"??
I was watching the Bill Dance 'reel story" on tv and he was talking about the reel's and he was say's like a million things about the gear ratio and the brake and the line and I got so confused with in 5 minutes or so and he was saying that these ittle thing's with the reels can trigger bits so I got worryed about my reels thinking maybe that is why I am not doing so good catching bass wise, so i thought i would tell you guy's my setup and you guy's could tell how to set them up and if they were ok or not.
1st rod is an Medium action ugly stick with a spinning Shakespear excursion reel with the gear ratio of 5,2:1 and 50lb powerpro briad. 2nd rod is a medium action ugly stick with a spinning daiwa regal-z 3600c reel witch does not say the gear ratio. 3rd rod is medium actin ugly stick with a basspro shop's extream baitcating reel with the gear ratio of 6.4:1 Any suggestions??? |

I wouldn't worry about your equipment, all bill dance was probably saying what the reels strength and wrenching ablities, the only thing that would better your chances to catching fish is to watch your line for a run or twitch, plus hold the line over one finger to feel for bites..
the gears and brakes don't effect your catching ability, they just help once you have hooked a fish....on the bait caster I like to see the lure drop about 8 inches and then stop, with a brake setting about 4. on the drag on either spinning or baitcaster, I like to be able to pull a little line out with some resistance. Some like to lock the drag more than that, but I have always just used my thumb on the spool to slow a run, once the line is being pulled out with the drag working, with a fish on... |

When it comes to watching a fishing show, there is only one thing you need. That's Tivo! I tivo all the fishing shows that I like and I can watch them very quickly (skip commericals) that way. I can also replay parts that I misunderstand or just miss.
My new favorite fishing show is Bassmaster University. I have learned alot from that show! Oh, by the way: There is a good segment on spinnerbaits on bassfan.com under the bassfan radio section. It is the one that has Terry Bolton speaking. |
