dyas, hulapopr knows more then most about every types of snakes. he was just askin so he could tell if it was a copperhead. i actually also like snakes, i hate to kill them unless it is absolutly neccessary. like i said, you can get a big ticket for killing some snakes. and you are in even deeper if you kill an endangered snake.

gotta use your head when it comes to snakes. Most won't bother you and as long as you step loudly, you'll be fine. If you're going to be going through THICK grass where you can't see your ankles, I'd wear some snake boots. They are a little pricy, but well worth it if you often find yourself in the thick of things like myself. I only kill a snake if its a threat to family and my dogs, otherwise i let it on its way.

If you kill the snake you will never git bit by the same one and you can take the hide and sell at the stock sell.

but there is no reason to kill a snake unless it is threatening you. and they will run before they threaten you. and most snakes arnt even venomous, and they sure wont bite you for no reason. like i said, you can face a big ticket for killing some snakes. its better to just let them be. remember, you are the one who is bothering it, its not bothering you.

About the only good reason to kill a snake is if its poisonous and its threatening a pet or child that doesn't know better...... or if you're mowing the lawn and didn't see it. :

The only snake you have to be scared of are water moccasins. These are snakes that will try and attack and go after anyone in their territory. All other poisonous snakes will eiter give you a fair warning by hissing and rattling, or they are very docile except for these. Just know how to tell the difference between these and every other water snake. Heres a short site to tell you all you need to know about moccasins:
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/conserve...ottonmouth.pdf The way to tell a definite difference between a moccasin and a water snake is that moccasins bodies float with their head well above the water. Other water snakes bodies are underwater when it swims and the head stays barely just above the waters surface. |

I just found one in my backyard as I was mowing. Picked it up, admired it's coloring and let it go after moving to where I wouldn't get it with the mower. It was a Garter Snake, non-poisonous, and it eats the bugs and critters that I like less than a snake. Been catching them since I was a kid.

I love catching those gartersnakes but I found out that if you tick them off or grab them by the head they will bite you. It dont hurt but its a little suprising.

Actually there are alot fewer poisonous snakes than people are aware of. Most snakes, which appear to be moccasins are no more than plain old water snakes.
As far as poisonous snakes go, your area may harbor some type of poisonous snakes but only a very few are poisonous. Here we have copperheads in another area there are rattle-snakes. Copperheads are short but have large girths. Zooker , I think ya'll have rattle-snakes more so than in this area. Correct me if I'm wrong. |
