When bass are schooling how do ya catch them? I know what kinda lures to use and stuff. But every time I start to fish arond them they stop schooling. And once I paddle to a different spot they'll start to school again. Anybody know whats wrong?

Re: schooling bass
yep say as far from them as possible and throw a lil george.note your clothes color of your shirt should be light the fish are so shallow that they are seeing you. blending in with the sky would help majorly.

Re: schooling bass
Stay away from the school and cast past them reeling into the school. Preference is yours, As normal you'll get multiple replies from spinnerbaits to crankbaits, I prefer rattle traps. Basically you'll bring your bait into the school or just below it, hopefully triggering a strike from the bass down below. This is a simple answer, maybe some of the more seasoned can offer a different approach or philosophy or technique. 8)

Re: schooling bass
Speaking of the Little George.
Which way is it designed to be fished? Do you tie on at the tail loop behind the spinner, or do you tie on at the top of the lure? : |

Re: schooling bass
schooling bass are one of the most exciting ways to catch fish in all of fishing. If they are schooling good you can catch them on a variety of baits, with little effort. I have seen so many guys run full speed into schooling bass and then wonder why they stopped. Schooling bass are very aggresive fish, but at the same time are very spooky. I prefer to throw a Rat-L-Trap, or a small topwater, like a zara puppy. Always approach the school with caution, and very quietly, and always start casting around the school instead of in the middle of it. Yes, the fish will go down eventually, but just hang tight, and keep casting. Just because the fish are not busting the top of the water doesn't mean they have vanished into thin air. They are still there and will be following whatever schools of baitfish they were feeding on before. Also, take into consideration what type of area the fish are feeding in. I have seen fish school in two feet of water, and 40ft of water. The shallower the water the spookier the fish. Good fishing.

Re: schooling bass
You tie a Little George at the line tie on the top of the lure. Â*This thing will cast like a bullet, and sink like a rock. Basically you either reel it straight back, you yo-yo during the retrieve, or you let it sink to the bottom and "RIP" if up, and let it settle back, while keeping your line tight. Â*Strikes generally come on the fall.
You'll need to have about a 5 gal bucket of the things because you can get them snagged in a bathtub. By the way. The "Little George" was named or Former Alabama Governor, and two or three time presidential candidate George Wallace. For schooling bass I like either a rattle trap, or a Pop-R, but most any bait will do when they're really ripping into a school of shad. |

Cajun, I did not know that. Makes sense though, since they are made by Manns.

Re: schooling bass
If you can see the size of the baitfish they are feeding on, try a jigging spoon approx. the same size. They cast like a bullet, too. Rather than jigging, though I throw them past the school and crank it back through them as fast as I can. Hang on to your rod, though-that can generate some HARD strikes.

Re: schooling bass
Yea, WTL. Â*I've heard Tom Mann tell the story of how he came to name the "Little George" for the Governor several times. Â*Man was that THAT long ago? Â*
I remember that summer. (1968 ) Â*"Burn Baby Burn". I like to fish a Pop R on schoolies. Â*Or a Pop R, with a Normans "Front Runner" in front of it. |

Re: schooling bass
the problem's i am seeing on high rock this year is shad size at this time of year 90% of the shad are 6-8" long and bass will hammer a spinner bait. last sunday every school of shad i seen was less than 3" this makes for tough fishing with a 4" fluke or even a #4-5 shad rap.
although the crappie are on a feeding bender. zooker

Re: schooling bass
About 2 weeks ago we found a school of bass. With a gold rattle trap I was catching two at a time. I just ripped the bait through the water and they would nail it.
Note: The gold color is painted on top of a chrome bait so if you want a chrome bait , just throw the gold bait enough and it'll chip. Now you will have a chrome bait vs a gold bait. |

Re: schooling bass
I don't think a Rattle Trap is "right" until you've smacked it on the water enough to beat about half the finish off of it anyway. Gotta get it down to the bone color.

Re: schooling bass
Another "trick" I've heard of for schooling bass comes from a buddy of mine, who is a friend of Guido Hibdon's. When he and Guido were fishing at Buggs Island Lake a few years ago, they got into a schooling bass situation. Guido rigged up a spinning rod with 5 tube baits tied on in a "daisy chain". He made one cast, got hit, and waited until he had four more hits and reeled in 5 fish. Not legal in tournaments, not legal in some places maybe, but something to keep in the back of your mind.

Re: schooling bass
5 fish on one cast? Jeez, that would be a fight. I'm sure that works some, cause we've all seen an instance where we hook a bass and there are 2 or 3 other fish trying to snatch the lure from the hooked fish' mouth.
