spinnerbait trailer hooks
How do you guys keep your trailer hooks in line with the spinnerbait. my trailer hook always seems to end up at about 90degrees to my main hook. i use a 2/0 hook with a small piece of rubber hose to keep it in place. is this the best way to rig a trailer hook? I hate to not use a trailer hook since i know how many extra fish it will catch.

Re: spinnerbait trailer hooks
Some people say to put on a trailer hook, you put a piece of tubing over the trailer hook's eye, then poke the spinnerbait hook through the tubing and eye of the trailer hook, then line up the hook so it extends straight out and is parallel to the main hook.
Many others, including yours truly, prefer a free-swinging trailer hook. In this case, just slip the hook's eye over the main hook, then slip on a piece of tubing past the barb to keep the trailer hook from coming off. Instead of tubing, some guys use a hole punch and punch out discs from some plastic, such as a coffe can lid. Good luck. |

Marty, an easier alternative is to save the soft plastic connectors that hold soda or beer cans together. Cut a small piece, pull over the point and pass the barb and cut into a circle with some scissors. Holds trailer hooks great. (and a lot easier for guys with big, clumsy fingers.) Pull off with a pair of needle nose pliers. Sam |

Re: spinnerbait trailer hooks
If you fish around structure then your bait is liable to hand up more with a trailer hook. Buzz baits are good to use trailer hooks on, and spinnerbaits are ok when in more open conditions.

Re: spinnerbait trailer hooks
I have always used the tube method and they stay fairly straight. Trailer hooks are good when Bass are short striking. I am not sure why they do it sometimes...but yes they can hit the spinner skirt and not the hook. It will feel like you have snagged something or hit something but no fish. I have seen them do it when I am skimming a spinnerbait on the surface at high speed. Slowing down presentation will also help with this.

Re: spinnerbait trailer hooks
Well, since it was brought back up, You want your trailer hook to be free swinging-if you use the tube method, or use aquarium tubing over the eye of the hook before you punch the point of the main hook through you may end up with the problems basscatcher is having-the trailer hook ends up pointing every direction except directly behind the bait. Instead, I just get a hole punch and use it on a plastic coffee can lid. Then, after I put the trailer hook on the main hook I take one of the plastic disks from the coffee can lid, punch the point of the main hook through it and slide it down on the shank of the main hook. It keeps the hook on but stills it to be free swinging, which will allow it to trail benind the bait.
Cman, I NEVER throw a buzzbait without a trailer hook, and if I'm not using a plastic trailer on a spinnerbait it has a trailer hook on it, and if I'm using a split tailed trailer I can use both the trailer and a trailer hook. |

I think they help. Although a spinnerbait isn't one of my heavily used lures, I always use a trailer hook when I do use them. One time last year I caught three, including my best of the year, and all three were on the trailer hook. If the hook isn't getting snagged, I don't see a reason not to use them. |

Re: spinnerbait trailer hooks
CATCHER,
Put a small amount of silicone aquarium seal, like "Goop" in the eye of your trailer hook and let it dry. When you run your main hook thry the eye of the trailer hook, the silicone will hold it in place behind the main hook. JackL |

Re: spinnerbait trailer hooks
why do you need a trailer hook?
i always thought you can just hang the trailer on your spinnerbait hook. does it better your chances? |

Re: spinnerbait trailer hooks
bf, you don't need to get "trailer hooks" as such-any hook about the same size as the hook on your spinnerbait will work as long as the eye of the hook is big enough to go over the point of the main hook. I've used trotline hooks in the past and they worked real well.
