Re: how many people enjoy using an ultralight?
I like to use them for many applications (small plugs and especially slider fishin), but I wouldn't go as far as to say I prefer them over my other rods.

Wait till you jump on a BIG fish. You'll find out what kind of fisherman you are. If you do hook into a BIG fish be sure to back reel to play the fish.

Re: how many people enjoy using an ultralight?
Being in south Mississippi, most of the lakes I fish don't allow me to use light gear. There is one lake I fish though, where I can get away with it. I have been experimenting with it for the last several months with great success. I wouldn't exactly call it ultralight though. The lightest you can go around here is a spinning reel, 8lb test, and a 6.5ft medium action rod. I have had a lot of fun out of that set up this summer though. I have also landed some really nice fish on it. My biggest being a fat 5lb 6oz. fish. Now, that was fun.

Re: how many people enjoy using an ultralight?
Can't say I like ultralight at all for Bass. It's kinda like fly-fishing for Bass. Yes you can do it successfully, but why? I don't Want to lose a Bass because of my equipment, if it happens I want it to be from something out of my control. It also limits the kind and weight of baits useable effectively. You can't use a 1oz jig on a ultralight, or a heavy spinnerbait. Ultralights are for the kids fishing for bluegill or crappie fishing. IMO

Re: how many people enjoy using an ultralight?
Personally,
I love to use Ultra light spinning tackle, it was my original way of fishing, when I was younger. With this tackle I love to rig up some weightless plastics, or small crankbaits, small spinnerbaits, spoons, in-line spinners (roostertails), smaller jigs to pitch, and sometimes flies. -StetsD |

Re: how many people enjoy using an ultralight?
Ultralight's great for fishing where you know there aren't many snags, and you're using small lures...
If youre fishin heavy cover with a big spinnerbait or some other big lure with an ultralight, then u'll be playing your lure, not even mentioning a bass... seaphantom |

My god man,you mean they have Tuna where you fish? Trust me, i am wondering why i got the 30# powerpro. You could not POSSIBLY need 50# for anything short of a Pliesiasaur. ;D Charles |

anit yet seen many black sea bass over 8 pounds. boss 50 pound braid is fine if you are using it on a jug for cat fish ;D but for bass-talk about draging the trees out-and power just how do you break it happen it gets hung on a rock ledge??? 50 pound braid will cut all the way through your hand be fore it will break.-trust me- i use a 12" hunk of stainless pipe to break 30 mono-my pnj rig-use your head for once -you know it's that large round thing above your arms... zooker

Re: how many people enjoy using an ultralight?
I wrapped the line around the end of a boat oar several times. Took some serious muscle power, but it broke.
No, i do have a little better sense than to use my hand to try to break it . I dont even do that with mono. I did once, and got a nasty little cut. Charles |

Re: how many people enjoy using an ultralight?
One of the questions is why use light gear for bass. Well, at certain times of the year, you will simply catch more fish using light gear. I used to say it was crap too, until I tried it for myself. Using light gear does limit your ability to throw heavier baits, but if you are using light gear then you are not looking to throw those baits in the first place. In the dead of summer down here the water gets hot, and the bass get lethargic. They may still be shallow, but they are very reluctant to chase a spinnerbait or slam a buzzbait, I don't care what the fishing shows say, lol. I have learned, this summer especially, that scaling down your rig can put more fish in the boat. Smaller, lighter, more natural lures, fished on lighter, less visible line, that moves less water, can most definitely add up to more strikes. As long as you know how to fight a fish, and have your drag set right, and of course the cover is not too thick, a very large fish can be landed on light equipment. Hell, its fun. At least it is to me, good fishing.

Re: how many people enjoy using an ultralight?
Man I love my ultralight! esp trolling lakes with hard cover. I love the fight and I can cast on dime and give you change! lol. 18inch 3.5 pounds is the biggest one I ran into so far, dread the day I hook the bigone. I always have my drag set low, just in case.
