you will need 3 wires for the 12/24 system.however,(and i have done this).you can wire it strictly 24 volts.then you would only need 2 wires to the front of the boat.and a jumper from pos to neg between the batteries.on the motor you will have 3 wires coming out to hook to a plug.USUALLY the heavier wire is the 24v wire.if they are the same size wire,then you will just have to test both wires to see which one is the 24 volt.you can do this without hurting the motor by only sending 12 volts to the front and which ever wire makes the motor go slower on high should be the 24v wire....good luck.
