Hadn't been out in 12 days, so I was hoping this hump of hydrilla I found on a cattle ranch by us, two farmers flooded a valley in 1968 to water both thier herds of cattle, and I've been fishing it since 1981...
Well the hydrilla was still there, alive and green, but the fish I found today were suspended in 12 feet of water, and I think most hit about 4-6 feet down...Tried and tried to get them hit the rogue, its cold enough, but most came on crankbaits (pnj's rattletrap, a manns minus one, silver and black, and a muskie colored rogue. Had several fish under 12 inches , and the ones I am showing arent big, but they were keepers, and made for a mighty good way to spend the afternoon.. Air temp was a whooping 65..a heat wave for ohio in late november, and water temp was 56. Didn't find any fish on flats, all over deep water, most hit on the pause and fought pretty good! Heres some pics from the ol johnboat ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

yup, these ohio ponds are always surrounds by either hay fields, corn or beans, this lake has all three, which brings in the deer. Good day on the water, couldn't find any shallow tho, the fish had plenty of pull left in them for this time of year....
I'm still surprised no fish on the grub today.... |

Wow, nice job! yesterday the temp was great... Kicking myself for not pushing my dad into taking me. Question, though. When I lip a bass, I hold it completely vertical. Others do as done in these pics. My fish flop like mad... Is it because of the way i lip them?

if ya got a good hold on the bottom lip, the bass tend to lie still(but not always)...I usually don't even hold them, but did for some pics, usually when I get one in on the crankbait, I just swing them in and grab the opposite treblehook(the one they aren't hooked with, out of the three) and pull the opposite direction, so the hook that is in the mouth just pops out and the bass goes back in the water....bigger bass need to be supported by the mouth and belly if you're going to handle them horizonally for a pic.
Holding the way you do for pics is fine too cranky.. today is going to be a carbon copy of yesterday, then some really cold weather is hitting, so if I were you i'd get out there and get in on some of this moon phase ...the bite is on! |
