There are several small ponds in the area with good populations of bass in them and they are healthy bodies of water. Unfortunately, many of these ponds are being way overfished, and the fish are being caught by unexperienced anglers who have no idea what they are doing. Many are just using live bait and fishing for food, and keeping everything they catch, which is killing any opportunities for good fishing in suburban areas. My friend used to have a great pond right by his house, loaded with 8+ bass that he could catch very often. Then some indian person moved into the neighborhood and started keeping every single fish he caught out of it, even huge bass that he caught. Within a short period of time it became simply awful to fish there. This is happening to good ponds and small lakes all over the area because the fish population is too small to recover from people keeping their fish. Anybody else have this problem or is it mostly just in an isolated area around where I live.

well, the river i fish is not severly overfished, but there are these guys that come down there and keep whatever they caught. now, this is more of a creek then river, and theres not many bass in the part i fish to begin with. lately i have had no success there. i havnt even seen the larger ones around anymore. i think the bass will eventually come back, but it is being overfished.

no hula it is happing all over the place. not just in your area. the poeple who are taking them are mostly with out an understanding of how the catch and release principal works. i fully understand what you are going through i spent more time than i care to amitt to restocking fished out ponds. i own and have stocked my own 2 acre pond. the only thing i keep out of it is brim and crappie-seeing this things reproduce worst than rabbits-if the ponds you are talking about are public water.there aint a whole lot you can do about that if they are privately owned i would find out who owns them and complain to the owners. ponds are very pricy to stock in the first place.and the owner will either fence it off so one can fish them or post it from tresspassing which you only need to ask them if you can fish it catch and released only..

Hula,
this is why i try to fish in catch and release only park ponds. But.. I do know what youre going through, had a good little hole in a stream for trout once, and would catch and release all the time, then some bo bo comes up right beside me and my dad, catches a nice fish and takes it. Thats a kick in the face |

Zook,
Of course there is my back up lake that I always have confidence in. Its a private lake that only people in my neighborhood are allowed to go on to, much less fish. Good news is that it is surrounded by docks and its quite large so no one can fish it from land (here's where my canoe and my friend's trolling motor come into play). Anyways there is literally only ONE person that lives on the lake and fishes it, so it is packed with bass, not to mention huge ones.. Record bass coming form this lake was 16lbs. ![]() |

If you got a trolling motor and battery, bring it over some time and we'll be out all day.

Zooker is right. Ponds are getting overfished all over the country. One small lake that I fish has alot of people fishing from the bank. Yes, they keep what they catch which is actually no problem, since it is a lake fish can go anywhere. One problem that WE do have is that these people who fish from the bank leave everything thats left over. I.E. Worm containers, drink cans etc..
I have been fortunate to recieve permission to fish a couple ponds that are fished by only a couple different people. The grounds are left as found and these ponds are strickly catch and release. We all know each other, so therefore adherence is observed by all who fish these areas. As far as the ponds being public, all that I can think of is letting others know that they should release some of these fish or the pond(s)may be fished out. |

Here's my solution.....Just go over to the pond and put a sign in that says "catch and release only....$100 fine if caught"....

bassnman30,
You're dead on when it comes to people leaving junk around all over. They will leave worm containers, cans, their buckets, chairs, and even a busted rod or reel in the water. Not to mention all the stuff that people who do NOT fish throw in there. |

I fish one private pond. The trouble isn't that too many fish are being taken out. The problem is there are too many fish being left in. The owner is nice enough to let a few people fish there but everything has to go back in. I have no problem with this because I always CAR but there is a serious over crowding problem that the owner doesn't understand. The big lake i primariarly fish is mostly noted for the walleye. I practically have all the pads, wood, etc. (good spots) to myself. So it's not a problem there. All I can say about around here is thank God for the trout. They can have all of them.

hula i have to agree with bassman this even happens in large lakes. when they fill the lake up from draw down. not only are you dodging logs and trees but empty propane tanks and drinks bottles and cans.it is very messy.

1. All adult bass are fished out
2. People get sick of that water and leave 3. Baby bass turn into adults Until then, seek for your own spot if you can. Not that many people fish the pond out here, and I like it that way. If anyone wants to catch and keep a bass in the limits, and it is legal in that water, so that they can eat the fish, that is their right. If they are just keeping it out of ignorance, that is a problem. |
