top water frogs
thanks for all the help on my other ?'s, but i have 1 more for u. i was fishing a frog and a senko skipping it across pads, when all of a sudden i missed 10 fish that would have won the tournament but instead i have a big zero. the first fish i was way too impaitent on set way too soon, but then i calmed down and the next 9 i literally waited till i felt them pull, then set the hook only to have the frog almost pierce my ear, then on the senko as soon as it hit the pads the bass explode on it but still no fish. what am i doing wrong if anything.

Waiting until you feel them pull is the correct way to do it. What kind of frog? Did it have 2 upturned hooks? Were they real sharp? Maybe you didn't wait for the fish to pull hard enough before you pull back.
The line (mono vs braided) and the stiffness of your rod are also important factors. As for the Senko - you might have had the hook point buried into the Senko too much, or were using the wrong type/size hook. When I use the technique you describe, I use a 4/0 or 5/0 Gammie (EWG) on a 5" Senko, and merely "skin-hook" the Senko. Also - make sure your hooks are very sharp. DrB

Sharp hooks and braided line sound like a winning combination to me.

As has been suggested use a braided line like powerpro, wait for the fish to grab the bait, if the fish misses leave the bait where it is as if stunned. The fish may strike again. I had some luck a couple of weeks ago fishing scum at the banks edge with a Snagproof frog. I caught a hawg between 8 and 9 pounds. I waited to feel the pressure then the fight was on.

I wonder if it would help to add something to the inside of the body of the frog to weigh it down a little, enough to get it just below the surface of the water. Maybe that would allow the bass to get a better mouth full of the frog? I also use braid for frog fishin, along with a heavy action 7 1/2 foot casting outfit.

Keith, extra weight would definately help with casting but finding that magic weight that will just neg balance the frog is nearly impossible. How about using cut up floating worms as both weight and rattle. just cut it up into little sections and push them up into the body cavity of the frog and make sure they have enough room to rattle when the frog is shaken. Then take it out and try it on the weed mats.

I use a big hook when I use soft plastic frogs. Atleast a 5/0 EWG worm hook. Last time I when to my tackle shop, they were out of Gamakatsu hooks that big, so I had to go with a Mustad, and it needed sharpening right out of the box, I was kind of disappointed in Mustad... And now that i look at other Mustad hooks they aren't nearly as sharp as some others.

Finally somebody else endorsing the sizmic frogs. Ive been using them for a little while now. Great action, great colors, thinner in size than a horny toad. I have a much higher hook up rate with these over horny toads.

quick note on the weights.... I put glass beads in my frogs...doesn't help much with weight but great for a little noise..... I also twitch the bait after a slap just like it is stunned....which is what the bass is trying to do anyway.

thanks for the input, i was using a spro bronzeye frog with gam hooks and braid line the hooks point up and every fish was just sitting there laughing at me as i casted into the pads. as for the senkos i was using a 2ot hook because of the density of pads real thick. i even tried to leave the frog there after a strike but the lil bast.......s went out to lunch after that excitement. ill try these points u guys recomend and c what happens

If your using Soft plastic frogs, like horny toads, and such, try this. I found this looking throug old posts trying to learn stuff. I am not taking credit for this, it was JB who posted it.
Cut off one hooks form a treble and put it on your regular hook as a trailer then hook the extra hooks in the legs. I just thought this was a great Idea so I had to share it. Thanks again for the Idea JB!!

I fish alot of frogs and pour my own also. As for adding weight. I have found using a suspend a dot wrapped around the belly of my 5/0 ewg works well if their is a bit of wind, it also keeps the frog up right. I suppose you could also use a flutter head for soft jerk baits. I think falcon makes them not sure though.

Welcome to the forum Riverrat. What type of frog do you pour? I'm trying to collect as many frogs as I can (the horny toad type). I've seen some molds. Or did you make your own?

i had several long chats -on the phone- with deacon and several other western guys. when it came to choosen a frog rod. they are NOT the same as other rods.and they are right, my choice was a fenwick but not just ANY fenwick it was a custom ordered rod.. it is a 7'3'' heavy action hmx blank with 9 eyes the rod blank is 3/4 of the weight and size of a regular fenwick heavy action hmx rod. fenwick calls it there frog stick..belive me it was the best $175 i ever spent.. i have a extreme-lol-lefty reel loaded with 50 pound calcutta ultra braid.. the hook of choice easy 4/0 gammy super braid..i have caught 350 bass in the last 2 years on THE SAME HOOK..
nuff said river ratt ya want to change that avatar? it is given me cold chills..it is mid 40's here and i am aout to go race across the lake.. zooker

Bob, I pour del's buzzfrog and it's awesome. I have fished every frog out there and think you can't beat the horny toad and del's buzzfrog. I caught a 5 and 7lber on Champlain this spring with del's frogs. I have had 100 fish days on that lake just on frogs! I only use 2 colors white and greenpumpkin.
Zooker, yes the chill is in the air and the ice is coming at least up here. My avatar is my biggest bass yet 7lb14oz on a 10" Golden shiner. Talk to ya later Good fishing!
