Default Treble Hooks

As Winter has set in here in SE Michigan, I am going over the lures and notice I need some new treble hooks on a few lures. What brands would you guys reccommend? Also, what sizes? Should I use the sizes currently on the lure? Larger in front, smaller in back, vice-versa?
I was thinking Daiichi or Gammakatsu. What's your take on these hooks - treble wise?

I also need some feathered trebles for topwater and Spring/Fall jerkbaits. What brands of feathered trebles do you reccommend? Are the Excaliber hooks any good?

Thanks in advance,
-LL-

I like Mustad triple grip hooks and VMC Barbarian trebles. They're all good , especially if the ones you have now are bad and needing replacing. As of late, I have been buying the Eagle claw 4x trebles for rigging trolling squids and flies. They work fine and if you replae them often, like I do, its a good alternative to save money, but if you leave them on long enough to need replacing, you might want to invest in a Gamakatsu. I think the Daiichi is a great hook, but they are light wired, most likely wouldnt hold up to the long haul as some people might put them through. P N J

I also like to replace the #6 back trebles on rattle traps with the same #4 size as is on the front. p n j

I'd go with Gamakatsu (if your willing to pay the price). If not, VMC Barbarian or short shank Rapala hooks are awesome too. This coming spring, I think I am going to switch all my hooks to VMC.

I'm looking for the hooks that I have to change once, if not at all the whole bass season(March/April-October/November). From the looks of it, you're saying Gamakatsu's are the way according to my criterion? If I don't have to change them, unless I snag a rock or something, I'd rather not change them...

Are the Mustdad's and VMC's long-lasting? Will they last 7-8 months without a change, saying that they have endured not-too-harsh conditions?

as a side note, could always sharpen the points as well with a file or one of the hook sharpener tools... Probably much cheaper!

mustad triple grips are awesome. i replaced the hooks on all of my lipless crankbaits with them (as lipless crankbaits are bad about losing fish). when you hook a fish on these things they stay stuck. don't think i have lost a fish on a lipless crankbait since i went to the triple grips. they will last as long as any of them out there. one side note, always have a pair of good needle nose pliers handy. they don't want to let go even when the fish is in the boat, which i like that a lot more than losing fish especially when the fish are worth money in a tournament.

I use these:

They will stick you from two feet away.

Looks like a nice hook. What do you use them on? Cranks, jerkbaits, topwater? Not a bad price either, not a bad price at all...

Pretty much all of them. I used to sharpen hooks, but now I pretty much replace them.

If you are changing hooks there is one piece of equipment I can't recommend enough: A pair of split ring pliers. Makes changing hooks a whole lot easier.

Just like the others, i'd say Gammies or VMC. Don't forget Owners, though.

I use Excal hooks size 4 . That is an good size for any med size crank or top water. Excal or Owner hooks are sharp as can be out of the box Trust me I have dug many out of my hands and fingers.

I have heard nothing good about Owner, but they carry a hefty price tag don't they?

I really like the Owner dressed trebles. Now I use Owners for everything except wacky rigs since they expanded their line with red EWGs this year. Darned sharp hooks and never had one break yet.
That said I have not had a problem with VMC or Gammy trebles either. VMCs come with a red feather.
Or make your own dressed hooks with the feathers from your chickens, sewing thread, and some nail polish!

Anybody know what kind of hooks are on LC Pointers? Those are beyond sharp! (but do bend easily)

Thanks All!

For my dressed trebles, I think I may try Owner, and for all my others, I think I'm going to try the VMC's or Mustad's. I can't buy anythin, I am on a budget according to Mom. Dang!

Thanks for the info Zooker, they are sharp as heck and stick into anything: clothes, gloves, skin, each other, etc.

LL, here's where I get them, close to you: http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/dressed-treble-hooks in #4
Also they normally ship same day as ordered and UPS Ground is one day to us.

Kevin, if I'm stepping on any sponsor's toes, please delete this post.

These days you can get hooks in the #3 and #5 sizes. These hooks work well when upsizing slightly.

VMC or the Mustad triple grips. For best bang for the buck, VMC are tough to beat, and sharp out of the pack. You'll get 25 for about $4.99. Mustad Triple grips just look awesome and I am hard to impress. I happen to like rapalas and they sport VMCs.
