Hello everyone. We've got over three feet of snow and there won't be any fishing until the middle of January. I still haven't got the problem that I had with my Abu Garcia Revo STX reel fixed. It can be smooth for an hour of fishing, and then it gets all grindy and horrible when I turn the handle. I definitely need to get this fixed. My Quantum isn't as smooth as it was a few seasons ago, but I expected that. I'm waiting for replies from both companies to see what they'll charge me. If I don't like their deals, I know someone from these forums will fix my reels. Are you the one who fixes reels PnJ? How much will you charge?
Later guys -Julien |

Jools, regarding your Revo working smoothly and then getting rough and grindy when you retrieve, I have something for you to check. I had the same thing going on with my ABU C3. It was that way for a couple trips and I wasn't sure what was the problem. Then the third time it happened I was looking the reel over and realized a couple of the screws on the outside of the reel were not tight, but rather loose. I tightened them down good and problem solved. Havn't had that happen again since.

Joolz, welcome back. Have you oiled/greased you reels recently or every season or what-not? If not you should start.
Lucky you abou tthe snow, We've got up to 40mph winds and huge drifts. The snow here is anywhere from 0" to almost 3'. I wish we could have 3' of solid snow. Needless to say, with the wind, they can't keep the streets clean so i have no school today. BB

I couple of years ago I bought a video from Lake Fork Tackle Repair. The video shows, step-by-step, how to take your reel all of the way apart, clean it, and reassemble it. It was just a few bucks, I think, and it has paid for itself time and again since.

Late reply, but thanks for all of your help and suggestions. I bought some $1.50 reel oil from sportsman's... where should I put this stuff on my reel? I also have WD-40, 3-in-1 oil and Slick 50 One. Should these be used on my reels? Should they be used any differently? I checked out that video, but I don't want to spend 20 bucks.

joolz-Never use WD-40 on your reel, it is a cleaner not really a lubricant. The reel oil is probably your best bet for a lubricant, think it will be thinner than the 3 in 1. Never used the Slick 50 but have seen where it was recommended for reels.
As far a lubing your reels, you really need to break them down and get the old lubricant and grime off, otherwise you will just be oiling the old dirt and grime. Once clean, you need to use Reel Grease on the gears and Reel Oil on everything else and don't over do either. I like the Ardent Reel Butter oil/grease but lots like the Quantum Hot Sauce products---both are good. As far as the $20 for the video, it might be a good investment in the long run. Typically, it will cost you nearly that much to get someone else to clean and lube your reels. In your fishing life, doing it yourself will more than offset the cost of the video. Luckily I was taught by my dad a few decades back. Reels were also much simplier back then. |

Yeah, I probably should make the investment. I have to clean my reels this winter.

Jools, If you make the investment in the video and tackle ot yourself. I would recomend buy a white beach towel specifically for the purpose and buy the correct tools to use, especially the correct phillips head screwdriver.
