What kinds of clothes would you recommend for fishing(casting) in say 15ºF? This is what I'll normally dress in:
-Tight Under Armour Shirt(long sleeve) -Four T-shirts -Two long sleeve shirts -Two/three sweatshirts -Columbia Jacket (yes, columbia rocks) -Socks -Boots -Two pairs of sweatpants -Big ole ice fishing/hunting suit So normally I'm okay with the main parts of the body; I only weigh an extra 30 pounds. The main problem is my hands. I've done some research and found that the hands being cold is just a way to conserve the heat for the chest and rest of the body. What kinds of gloves should I wear? Those big bulky gloves don't work well. The thin tight gloves are too cold. Is there any way I can trick my body into not conserving heat for my chest? Think some kind of heat pads on my chest would work well? I hope there are a lot of northern boys willing to contribute to this thread. |

Expensive, you're looking at $400-550 after shipping, but damn nice. After I buy my Frog Stik, I'm looking to save up for these babies...
Parka: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/st...10000_600-10-3 Bibs: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/st...10000_600-10-3 Action Shot!: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4..._1936Small.jpg -Courtsey: Bender I still would reccommend a few layers, especially a base layer like Under Armour, and some shirts, under this... -Lunk-

Joolz, I don't have the occasion to wear gloves often but when I do I use these:
http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/st...=SearchResults Keeps my hands warm but still allows me to use my thumb and index finger for casting. LL, I bought the Pro Qualifier Gore-Tex bibs/parka. I love them!

jools, i live up north like you and fish in the cold, you probably have to much on, too bulky to fish. wear long johns, rubber boots , couple tshirts, on sweatshirt an a good jacket.
Get gloves that the fingers come off or flip off and always carry two pair of gloves, one pair to wear, it will get damp or wet after a few hours. keep the other pair inside you jacket, nice n toasty, and switch off back n forth. most important, wear a cotton or wool cap. keep in mind your good for 1-2 hours of fishing, dont push it. |

I use cold weather gear. I like Herters Duck hunting bibs and parka's. Cabelas carries them and in all my years I have never stayed drier or warmer.
Hands and feet are the hard ones to keep warm.. It takes many types of gloves and extra pairs are always needed.. Capt Mike

Jeeze, those BPS coats must be nice. It seems thats what the people on TV are always wearing - those sponsored by BPS anyways...
So I'll be getting a good hat, and some good gloves. Thanks for your help guys... I hope to be getting out tomorrow. P.S.- Are the Quantum reels getting smoother? I was at Gander Mountain today trying out the reels and every Quantum was smoother and smoother until it got smoother than the previous smoothest reel I'd ever used! I am dropping my Christmas cash on one tomorrow. |

LL, actually that guy hates his 100MPH gear, it leaks. As far as cold weather gear goes I dress in layers:
Base: Long underwear or tight Tee on top, tight on bottom such as Hot Chilis or Duofold heavy. Second: Wool Sweater on top, jeans on bottom. Top: Not cold= Gander Mt. Guide Series bibs. Marmot top Gore-Tex layer. Cold: Descente insulated bids. Marmot coat with both layers. On boat=hunting boots with Thinsulate. On ice=Bunny boots and waterproof gloves/mittens. I have not been cold yet this year so far. ![]() Edit: It may be because his wife washed them, but they do leak. |

I have a some gloves like this except they have Thinsulate in them and no covers. I keep one of those air activated heat packs in each pocket and whem my fingertips get cold, I warm then in my pockets. BB

joolz,
if ya have lots of snow, some outfit that is water resistant is a must for keeping the knees and butt dry. esp if you have to lean down to work with tackle or fish, or happen to slip on the snow, the butt will be dry. True they are noisy when walking, and mine always split out in the crotch from stepping up to the flipping deck after a few months, but they are worth getting a cheapo pair (rain suit) if you can fit it over all the rest of the clothes. For me, with coveralls, you have to find a big set of rain/snow gear, they split out easy. |

Being that I have had 7 surgeries to my spine staying warm is the only way that I can even think of staying out in weather less than 50 and being on blood thinners dont help much neither. Here's a little tip for the cold weather fisherman that keeps me going when MOST people are headed to the fireplace. First off you have to keep your neck warm otherwise all the clothes in the world wont help. Turteneck long sleeve shirts made outta wool are just the ticket. I put a t shirt on then the t neck and then a sweatchirst, topped off with my favorite hoodie. On the bottom its the under armour britches followed up with sweat pants and then jeans and top it off with carhart insulated bibs that FIT. On the feet I have found NOTHING any warmer than the $49.99 Herman survivors that I bought from wally world. Dressed this way I have fished when every third cast had to dip the rod in the water to get rid of the ice on the guides.

One thing not to forget is to bring extra clothes. In the summer it's not a problem, but in the winter it's good to have more than you need.

Hey Joolz, here's a tip I learned on a recent trip fishing for trout. If you aren't going to keep the fish, do not touch their gills. If you touch a trout's gills and release it back, it lowers its chances of survival than if you'd hold it behind the pectoral fins. I thought I'd let you know this because I know we all want to help protect the fish, and the sport of fishing.

Yea u got that right bud. Nothing can ruin a day any quicker than getting wet in the cold weather and not have anything to change out to. Here's an old saying of mine: You can always take it off ifn ya dont need it but if it aint there in the first place how ya gonna take it off?

I've been reading this post and thinking about all of the new clothes that are available. Those of you who wear cotton t-shirts, socks, and pants deserve to be cold. There are much better alternatives. Here's my gear.
1) Long sleeve (mock turtleneck) athletic type gear - wicks away moisture -Reebok 2) Fleece pullover - Warrior 3) Water proof jacket - wind breaker - Columbia 4) Socks - I use two pair - base layer is for designed for skiers and the other is Smartwool 5) long johns - new lightweight material to resist cold - name unknown 6) Athletic type pants - wind and water resistant - Climalite by Adidas 7) Water proof pants - Columbia 8) Boots - waterproof - Redhead 9) Gloves - waterproof - ?? That's it. Very simple and very warm and water proof. I spend a lot of time outdoors, in the rain, wind, cold etc. with my job so fishing in the same weather isn't a big deal. Or I spend so much time fishing in the cold, rain, wind that my job isn't too bad. If it really gets cold I can add a hooded jacket under the rain gear and snow pants and then I can handle the very frigid weather (but we don't get a lot of that in VA). I do have gear for the head and face but don't need it too often. Last thing - all of the gear is black or dark blue and warms up nicely in the sunshine. |

WOW, no mention again of shorts and T shirt. However it is dropping down to the 30's for the next couple a days. Pray for us all. Hell, nevermind half this state is from up north anyways.
