Default Flipping/Pitching: T-Rig -vs- PNJ

OK Guys, now that I'm getting my new Flippin' and Pitchin' rod, I need some tips.

What do you Guys rather flip/pitch? A heavy, 5/8 oz. pegged T-Rig, or a heavy PNJ? Does it depend on the water(s) you're fishing, temperature, etc.?

Thanks in advance,
-Lunk-

To me, it depends on the confidence. I have 0 confidence in a PNJ, but a lot in a T-rig, so that's what I throw when nothin's working that well. You can catch bass in the same situations with a PNJ as you can with a T-rig.

T-Rigg lizzard is my confidence bait for flipping. I keep a couple of bottles of pig in the box. When i am really desperate i go to the jig. But i have to say my zoom lizzard is all i need 95.9 percent of the time.

I have to agree with the first 2 responses. I am a T-rig guy. Lizards, Sweet Beavers, and Brush Hogs.

Me three...though for the waters around here I use a fluke...may sound more like a carolina rig setup...but I've caught some nice bass with a T rig. Even from the bank.

Thanks, everyone! You Guys are great!

I just got my pay from Dad, hopefully I'll be able to snag a few bags of stuff from Tackle Warehouse!

I'd rather thorw a PNJ because like Senko said, it's all about confidence. And until I get better at t-rig and plastic fishing, I'm not very confident.

I'm kind of the same way, but you'll need both someday, might as well learn now..

First of all, surprisingly down here in the south, I seldom throw a 5/8 oz anything any more, unless I have to penetrate very thick grass. That ain't too often because even when I'm fishing grass I like to fish the edges. Most of my pitching (I seldom flip anymore either, pitching is just so darned efficient), is done with 1/4 oz or 5/16 oz and sometimes 3/8 oz on both my PNJ and my T-rig offerings. You get a good sized presentation to work a lot better if you lighten it up and get a slower fall in most cases. I've never seen a crawfish drop like a rock, and I know a salamander or lizard doesn't fall that quickly. With good rod and reel you can master the lighter stuff just as quickly, it just takes practice.

Do both and see how you do. I've always got both rigged up. Sometimes they'll hit one or the other or both.

if im up shallow(0-5 ft.) i use a texas rig with a 1/4 or 3/16 bullet weight. if im out deeper(5-20 ft.) i go with a jig(3/8 or 1/4) or a 10.5" worm with a 1/4 weight. if im not throwing a worm on the texas rig then i usually throw a brush hog or tube.

My favorite is what I call my Denny Brauer special. I like a 3/8 oz black and blue jig with a full sized black and blue paca craw threaded on as the trailer. I've caught a ton of fish on this. It's the full meal deal that they're looking for.

Well, here's what I ordered... So far, didn't have enough money for plastics ( I already have about 30 packs anyway)...

1/2 oz. and 3/4 oz. Plain

My second worm bag this season. This ones for worms; my other one (same model) will be for legged baits like creature, lizards, spider jigs, etc.

PNJ's. All 1/2 oz.

i keep two flippin sticks ready with either a texas worm rig and a jig n pig, or perhaps both with worms of dif size, ribbon tail and a 4 inch paddle tail.
Or..a pnj and a tube...the last few years I've carried a green tube and a tequila sunrise worm pretty consistently

"nuff said. Good advice. If you're tournament fishing, a Jig and Pig or a 10 inch worm is hard to beat. You're fishing for the win that way. In stained water I like my Jig and Pig in a blue/black with a Zoom super chunk trailer to match, in clearer water, green pumpkin, same trailer to match. 3/8 oz for either 90% of the time.

The 10" worm is a Berkley power worm June Bug. I buy 'em by the 100 count. 3/16 oz worm weight.

Third option is a Pro Model Strike King flippin' tube Tex rigged and often pegged with a 3/16 or a 1/8 oz worm weight.

With these baits, you're fishing for the win. Swinging for the fences. I've usually got two of the 3 above tied on to my two 7 1/2 foot Falcon flippin' sticks when I'm fishing a tournament. It takes confidence to fish these baits because you're eliminating a lot of the small bites.

Hmm, when you say "heavy cover", I'd say, yes, most of the time. I translate "heavy cover" as brush piles and unless you're pegged, you're going to be hung up more and miss more bites so when I'm fishing "heavy cover"/brush piles, I'm pegged most of the time. A lot of the time, what's happening in heavy cover is that the bait and the weight are getting separated and the bait is on one side of a branch and the weight is on the other and it's harder to feel the bite and easier to get hung up. In general, peg it for brush piles.

Since I haven't practiced pitchin that much for now I mainly flip. I use creature baits pegged. I just read Bassin's article about one versus the other. There is information on how Tommy Biffle pitches. Once the weather breaks I am going to give his method a try. I guess I am biased right now because the first time I flipped I caught my personal best.

I just saw BPS World Fishing and KVD was flippin' to some "heavy" cover (sunken tree tops), and he didn't peg his sinker. To me, it seems like you'd get more hang-ups like this; with the worm and the weight being separate, you have two pivot points (worm; sinker), so the line in between could easily wrap something.

I do a one two hit on each piece of cover until I find out what they want. Ill start with a plastic and 1/4 to 3/8 oz weight, then pitch a jig 3/8 oz. Eventually after enough flips or pitches you'll figure out which they prefer.

The only reason I bought heavy is because I already have lighter...

I will have a T-rigged Zoom Babybrushhog on one rod and a 3/16-5/16 oz jig on another rod when I'm flippin/pitchin. I will use anything from a 1/8-5/16 oz bullet weight on a T-rig. I use a lighter weight when possible especially in the early Spring. I slayed some nice bass in a pond last Spring pitch'n a Brushhog (the big one) on a 1/16 oz T-rig. They would kill it on the initial fall. My best 5 went 21 lbs. that day with a 7lb kicker!
