Actually, I wanted to revisit some earlier inquiries on selecting a rod that will be used primarily for pitchin' not flippin . . . I just thought "More Flippin questions" was a better title for this thread.
So, here are some more details on what exactly I am looking for . . . I want something with major backbone but a sensitve tip. I intend to pair the rod with a Chronarch MG which will be spooled with Power Pro 65 lb line (I was going to use the 50 lb but I recall reading some posts which mentioned problems with the 50 lb PP braid). I will be throwing a lot of 1/4 - 3/8 oz stuff (tubes, unweighted texas rigged senkos, unweighted Salty Shads, and 3/8 jigs) and once and a while I will go heavier. I don't mind spending a little bit of money but don't want to drop "Loomis" cash because every year I usually break a rod (never know which one will be the unlikely victim). Any recommendations? ![]() ![]() |

I like a 6 1/2 or 7 foot rod for pitchin but a 7 1/2 for flippin. I like a mde heavy action rod. The one I use is a Shamano 7 foot power action. I think the slightly shorter rod is a plus when you are pitchin because it allows the rod tip to be lowered further to create a little more velosity on the lure. You may be pitchin 25 to 30 feet away where when you are flipping you are generally 15 feet or less from the boat. If you pitch into boat sli[ps the shorter rod may be a plus for pitchin slips that have a boat in them. Fish2win

Like Fish2win I also like the shorter 6'10"-7' rod lengths for pitchin.I don't see a problem with 50 lb power pro, 30 lb will break off sometimes but I have never had 50 lb break unless it was a toothy critter shearing the line.I like a softer rod tip to put the jig under motion without alot of arm movement.I am at odds searching for a new pitching stick this year.I am going to start with an old 6'10" heavy Allstar titanium which for some reason has a softer tip for being a heavy action blank.I loved my Castaways HG40 series rods but I cannot afford to buy another new one after trading the ones I had so its look through the closet of rods I already have and the All Star got the call to duty. Let me know what you decide and later on how you like it.I always start with a 1/2 oz. jig for pitching and I will increase the weight more often than not but very seldom do I use a lighter weight than 1/2 oz. but use whatever you are most comfortable with .

I ordered some 65 lb Power Pro (along with a bunch of pretty crankbaits). Do you think I am going overkill using 65 lb test for pitchin into "green garbage"? Is there any benefit to using the line treatment on braid?

I wouldn't worry bout 65 being to heavy, the diameter is much smaller that a mono 65lb test.
I pitch with an all star 6-6 MH with 50 lb pp, no problems at all. |

First of all I like 30# to 50# Power Pro Braid very well and have been using it for at least 7 years now, no problems just get used to it and understand little intricacies like a "hard hookset on a solid object" means pulling the line out of the spool before another cast (it will pull into the spool occasionally).
I love pitching and use it most of the time (even with spinner baits and crankbaits especially around docks and other visible cover). For me it's nothing less than 7' long. Rods include Allstar Platinum sticks in medium action, Falcon Low riders and Caras in the same action, and the Shimano Scimitars (same action), and I have a 7' Browning that I love for Pitching. Every one of these rods were less than $115 and money well spent in my book. ![]()

Anywhere from 7' to 7'6'' should cover both flippin' and pitchin'. I use a St.Croix Avid, (AVC76MHMF). It is a great rod for the money, ($180.00). It may seem high, but all Avid's have a Lifetime Limited Warranty and will last a lifetime!

Check out the Loomis Mossyback line of rods. I picked up the Hvy Fast 7'5" late last year and got to play with a 1.5oz jig in the bass tank down at Roanoke. Oh Baby!!!

3D What blanks does the Mossyback compare to ? Is it as good as the IMX blank or is it better than the IMX ? C-Bird

I haven't had a chance to compare....yet. Especially with 25lb Big Game and a 1 or 1.5 oz weight on it. I do know it handles the weight extremely well and has more sensitivity than the St. Croix Premier that I have.
Got to play with the new rod today. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

C-bird......Piggy2 and tRaE both got the opportunity to play with the Mossyback at the Roanoke show with the 1.5oz jig but not in the fish tank. They can give you their opinion of the rod too.
