Red face On the Run

Got back on Hunting Run today. Weatherman predicted partly cloudy and in the mid-70's. Woke up to cold and rain . The Major calls and I look at the radar and see that the rain was moving away and told him that we were still on. Got there, put the boat in the water, and the rain started and it rained and rained. Then the wind picked up .

I picked up the first fish shallow on an old Rapala. Little bass, good looking stuff. Then caught a nice sunfish and the Major hit a small crappie. Not a bad start . Newspaper two days ago had a small story with a pic of VDGF man with 4 nice fish over 4lbs. Said that it was loaded with big fish. We continued throwing different baits and at different depths up to 16'. Picked up a little one here and another little one there. Best bass might go 12" and caught it on a Norman DLN. It's my second time on this body of water without a decent fish. and The Major isn't happy. Couple more sunfish and little bass and we're both getting frustrated. The Major catches the littlest one of the day. Won't even show his mug for the camera .

We're heading in towards the ramp since it's time to go. We're wet, cold, and there ain't no hint of any sunshine coming our way. I toss a Senko out in shallow water. No different than what we had been fishing all day long. Felt the tap, pick up some slack, and this fish is moving with a purpose. I reel down, set the hook and BINGO...finally got a nice one. Swing it on deck and got one to smile about . Called it a day. This little reservoir might be worth coming back too (we both have year passes). Not a bad finish.

Way to go, Smitty! We've got a local reservoir that has a reputation for "no big fish". That's ok by me. The place is actually full of quality LM and smallies- but they don't jump in the boat themselves. It just takes some real thinking to hunt them down and bring them to justice. Maybe you all will have a nice little honey hole that other folks will ignore because of all the "dinks"? Hope you get a chance to figure out The Run.

Some people do very well on this "new" body of water but others are very frustrated with the lack of quality bites and fish. When VDGF claims it's the second best body of water in the state and two "seasoned" anglers can only catch dinks it becomes questionable. We didn't see any bait fish in the water or on the sonar. None. And we saw very few fish on the sonar too. Very strange. There probably are good fish in the Run but it might turn out that they aren't as easy to catch as the local paper makes it seem.

Any updates on the tournament? Send me a PM.
