This weekend was the opener for bass fishing in Canadian waters and my dad happened to be in town so we planned to go out Saturday morning. Heavy storms were predicted so we postponed it until Sunday and hit the lake by my house on Saturday only to find my motor was running like crap and the front sonar unit was not working. Both problems had shown up recently but had gone away. We got off the water and headed to Cabelas to replace a rod that got broken and pick up some supplies. I almost got a Hummingbird 797 with side imaging, but they didn't have NVBs in stock so I ended up with a 520c Lowrance. Also they didn't have spark plugs for my engine! They are a Stratos dealer so I thought they would since the VMax is the most popular and cheapest engine on 285s.
Got home around 8 and got to work moving the console unit up front and putting the new one in the dash. Next pull the plugs to clean them and find one cracked! We have to launch at 6 A.M. and it is 10:30 P.M. at this time so I clean them all up and tape the crap out of that one. Get to bed around 1:30 and up at 3:45 to start the fun. Heading to the launch we find I-75 closed in Detroit and take ou own detour through some very interesting neighborhoods; lets just same I am glad the residents were sleeping and not awake to shoot at us from the burned out buildings and other decrepit homes. Get to the launch at anyway since I was driving way over the limit through that area. We launch and run a few miles up the Detroit River into the lake and stop to fish part of a channel. My dad hooks one up first on a tube: ![]() and then I get one on our Nemesis goby drop shotting: ![]() Then it started to warm up and the bite stopped. We ran a few more miles up the Canadian shore and stopped in 6 feet. We fished here for about 5 hours drifting around in the rain: ![]() ![]() we caught a ton of 1-2 pounders with a few 3s mixed in. All fish came on the goby. One fish even spit up a real live goby when my dad got him to the boat on one of our plastic ones! We decided to head back to deeper water to try to finish off the day with some bog ones and I did: ![]() ![]() ![]() New personal best for me, went around 6 according to the Golden Rule weight. A few casts later I whack another big good one: ![]() and then the bite stopped and we headed in. What a great day that we will always remember! |

Very little traffic, maybe because it was raining off and on most of the day and we were on the Canadian shore where it is a lot less populated than up around Anchor Bay or the Mile Roads.
Also just read the morning paper and there are very few boats out there due to the high gas prices. It cost me about $45-50 to tow mine to the ramp and then maybe $30-40 in gas in the boat. I only ran 13.5 miles for the day. Last edited by Bender; 06-30-08 at 10:36 AM. |
