The weather was perfect and the temperature was dropping a bit around here so I decided to hit the local pond on the way home from work today. I stopped short of the bank because I didn't want to spook any fish since the bite has been slow of lately. I had to cast over about 20 yards of very thick weed cover to reach the clearing in the water. I threw a pearl white super fluke with a chartreuse tail to the clearing in the water. Surprisingly after traveling around 35 yards, it landed rather softly and slowly sank. The water was clear enough to see the bottom of the pond (around 4 feet). To my surprise, I was able to see several fish immediately leave the cover of the weeds to investigate my lure. I gave it a small twitch and then I saw a huge swirl about 4 feet away from the lure and then a dark "shadow" beeline for the lure. I felt a huge hit. I am glad that I didn't wait to long to set the hook because after landing the beast, I noticed that she was hooked in the bottom lip.
![]() It was 2lbs 4oz. I had to quickly take a picture do to the wife calling and me not exactly having permission to stop and fish. However, I was able to run to the car and use the scale to get the weight. The cool thing about this fishing "trip" was that I cast one time, caught one fish which just happened to turn out to be a personal best and then left for home. Sadly I cannot even tell the wife about it because she would be angry that I stopped to fish in the first place. I am fairly confident that this is the same fish that I landed a few weeks ago since the weight is so close! I will gladly keep catching this fish as long as she keeps getting bigger. |
