Rock Solid Reel
Im getting my son a new reel as a present for his grades, he is currently using a abu garcia ambasadeur 5600 round reel,( the black workhorse). He is only 11 and very very tough on stuff yet wants a step up from the reel he has now. I was thinking
abu garcia 5600 ext, anyone have any experience with this reel. I know its a round abu so its bound to be tough, but thought id ask in case someone had some insight. |

The most solid reel i have ever fished with is my Cabela's Prodigy caster. I have had it for over a year now, and over 200 days on the water with it, and it still looks and fishes like it is brand new. It is a great reel that is easy to clean, and has one of the tightest drag systems i have ever fished, but it is still smooth.

One thing I learned was high speed reels in beginners hands are not good.
The lowest ratio available will help with plastics and hookups. The ABU is a good reel.. I have about 12 of them in all sorts of flavors. Capt Mike

I suppose he manages a 5600 well, but suppose you got him a 4600 or better yet, an LP. I reckon the LP would suit his smaller hands, unless he doesn't have small hands. My 9 year old daughter loves to use my 101D and that's a tough cookie.

You might want to consider a carcia 4600 c3 or a black max or silver max

I love the round reel design for its simplicity and reliability.I am not up on the new abus but I wouldn't be afraid of buying a round reel from its design.Basically they are all about the same design from brand to brand unless you find a Abu Eon round reel. The Eon was a whole nother different animal.I would recommend staying away from the Eon series reels unless you send them to the Abu for cleaning and service work done. There are alot of round reels that might be smaller, lighter and more comfortable to use. I love Daiwa ,Shimano round reels but they are pricey. Pflueger trion is offered in a round reel for like $80.00,unless your set on Abu Garcia ? P N J

i think that reel would be a great choice for him, like you said the abu-garcia round reels are tough as nails.
