Sick to my stomach
I usually try to add some description to my stories, but not much I can say about this one. I was out a local pond this afternoon throwing a DT-10. Went to make a cast and heard a terrible noise. I had a cat pounce on the bait right as I was begining my over head cast. I hope I never have to go through anything like that again. I don't know when I will head back out to the water. Right now it is not too appealing. I may not belong to any animal rights groups, but don't enjoy the idea of hurting one in a meaningless way.

Ditto - I am glad you are alright. I'm surprised that cat didn't tear you up though. I love animals, but I believe I would have cut my line and just felt guilty for a while on that one.

What did you do cass? I can't imagine dealing with a hooked cat on the line. Especially the way they react so violently when threatened. My dad caught a pelican once casting in Florida. It swooped down and gobbled up his lure as soon as it hit water. Luckily the pelican was quite willing to let dad do anything he had to do in order to free the lure from his gullet. I imagine the whole cat thing must have been rather upsetting. I once saw my brother nail a cat when we were golfing. Yeah, the "G" word. I don't golf anymore. Anyways, he teed off and his ball hit a cat on the behind on the way down. I didn't know cats could jump 14 feet into the air straight up, lol. Now THAT was funny, lol.

Yeah I can't say that I didn't laugh a little. Now that could be worth 10 grand if the right people see it. But if the wrong ones do it could be worth 5 to 10 in Levinworth. You know how those PETA nuts are. Don't sweat it cass. It wasn't your fault. Way I see it the cat owner owes you for the snapped line. bP |

Sadly the cat died. The back hook came up through the throat and put a deep 2 inch gash. The cat was drowning in it's own blood when I did the only humane thing I could do. Had the cat been okay then I could laugh about it. The pond is in a housing area. All I can hope is that it was a feral cat. I hope no one is out looking for their pet.

Sorry to hear that. I sure ain't a cat person, and I've killed more than my share of animals, but I don't take joy in causin em pain. It was more than likely a feral, and they cause a lot of ecological damage, just a shame when somethins gotta die in pain.....

Cass, I could tell after reading what you had to say that it was serious, I don't blame you for feeling the way you do.
At the moment I don't think it's funny. ~Mark |

Cass when you started the thread I didn't find it funny either, at all. That's why I didn't touch it. Until now...
What if it belonged to one of your kids?

Sorry.

as a cat hater i have to laugh inside. but i also understand why you feel bad and please don't beat yourself up over it, it's not your fault........things happen.
my grandparent used to have a ton of rabbits and quail on there land. but as houses started getting built closer and closer to them and people moved in who just let their cats run loose the numbers of rabbits and quail took a nose dive. as a result very few cats come accross my grandparents place that live to try it again. i have no problem with people having cats but if they want to keep their cats then they should keep them inside.

Cass I'm not trying to be a butt hole about this but how exactly did the cat get your bait? Most casts I make would make it very difficult for a cat to grab. The timing of your incident must have been impeckable. But like I said before things happen so don't sweat it. I 100% agree with CRig. If people want to keep thier pets alive they should keep them off other peoples property. I would have no problem what so ever if someone killed my dog or cat because it got on thier property. I would also have no problem lead poisoning them if theirs got on mine. I would first however give the owner a courseous reminder to please keep them off my land. My neighbors dogs used to come and jump in my pool and chase my cattle. The second time I went back and I advised that the next time I caught them doing either I would take care of the problem myself. Needless to say they haven't been back in my pool or in my pasture. And to top it off he was fine with it. He is a great neigbor
