Up here, we live about an hour away from a lake where 8" if vis. is good, and wabout the same distance from a lake that you can see 12' down. If the muddy water, we've done real good on white and hcartreuse spinnerbaits, double colorado blades. Also heard the rapala Hot Mustard colored crankbaits work good there.
For the clear water, natural colored crankbaits, including Bandit's Bluegill color. I've also done alright flippin' a watermelon red rage tail craw into the weeds. for dropshot there, watermelon, wtmln candy, green pumpkin, etc. Those natural colors. Hope this helps. BB

as a general rule i never let time of year determine color selections, but water clarity always makes this decision. as a rule of thumb the clearer the water the more natural colors i will use (greens, browns, watermellons, pb&j, ect). in water that is clear to stained i use a lot of the same type of colors but may want a bit of chartreuse added as well, like a missouri craw jig. when the water is more off color i go to a lot of browns, reds, black and blue type colors.

anyone got a link to a website that will help me out or sumthin? thanks, -spro |

SPRO.I dont think we can answer your question . You need to find out what colors are popular in your area from locals and fish them and get confidence in certain colors in different water clarities. Over time confidence will be the best weapon you have in bass fishing.

I will second what C-rig said but will also add that the amount of sunlight or cloud cover will help me make my decision. The brighter the sky, the lighter the colors I will throw. That being said, 90% of the plastics I throw are black, brown, or a dark blue/purple.
If I am tossing into the grasses, then I will switch over to watermellon. My friends think it is funny to see, but if I am going to a new body of water i will usually take a glance at the trashcans near the launch. A single empty pack of a particular bait won't tell me much, but if I find a dozen empty packs of a color then I have a reason to suspect that the fish are hitting on that.

No need to get all caught up in color-wish I had figured this out a long time ago:
Soft plastics: Watermelon, watermelon red and green pumpkin Jigs: Black/blue, green pumpkin, watermelon Lipped crankbaits: Shad, crawfish, chartreuse/black back Lipless: Chrome/blue back, red craw for spring, shad, firetiger if you have bluegill in the waters you fish Spinnerbait: White, chartreuse/white, chartreuse, firetiger(see above) Buzzbait: White for day, black for night Topwater: Take your pick Those colors will cover just about all conditions you will find. Add colors as you feel the need-and you will ![]() ![]()

I sure hope my wife never reads Reb's post. I am sure she would take exception to some of my purchases.

me too gang. take it easy spro.....we are here to help ya out pal. but it's like this, you can use the color combo WE like and not catch a dadgum thang, use what you like, and catch a boat load. we are scattered all across the country here. where i fish for example, i use white spinners no matter what the color of the water is, and can catch some fish. then use the same color up there and not get a nibble. although i am not saying white is the way to go in every case. it DOES depend on the time of year, water color, water temp water level and so forth.
i have found that a bass will eat ANYTHING.....on a given day. our job is to find out what he/she wants on that certain day. it's like the saying goes.....that's why it is called fishing, not catching. i like others think you need to ask around your area and find the MOST popular lures and spots at certain times of the year. fish em and look for similier spots. try a few tweeks here and there, you 'll find em and start catching em, i promise. we will help ya out as much as we can and you do the same for us. and remember...it about spending time out on the water and enjoying what nature has to offer. and yes it helps if you load the boat too.

Spro, it really comes down to one thing: Confidence. Find what colors work for you. And, I've found different baits work better in different colors. For example, my favorite color for Senkos is watermelon/cream laminate and Christmas tree. The colors I recommended are a starting point, not the end-all. And always remember, there is only one way to find out it a certain color or lure will work-go throw it ![]()

it really does matter where you are. i can catch fish anytime at a certain coal mine pond with anything orang and black but can't catch a thing with that color at other pond i fish at its more a trial and error thing find out what works for you and don't be afraid of colors other than the forage thats there sometimes something out of the ordinary will catch a big ones eye. like sweet potato pie or the famous pink helicopter.
