As some of you know I lost a pair of rods in the water the other day and ordered a Curado to replace them. Well I went to Bass pro to grab a couple of jigs in anticipation of the reel arriving and the monkey attacked. Yes my new real will be here monday, but that monkey just wouldn't wait.


So now Monday i'll have 2 instead of 1.

And if anyone cares, thats my lucky spinner bait that i've been catchin like wildfire with.

I'm lucky I lack the deck space in the boat or the monkey woulda hit me up for another setup last time I was in BPS.

Howzabout devising a way to secure your rods when not in hand or when under way? If you're a backseater and the boat has no provisions for tie-down, you might be able to secure your rods with some bungees to prevent them from being bounced out.
Recently, I had to loan a friend some first-line rigs to tide him over until he replaced some he'd forgotten to strap down BEFORE he crossed a wake. He still has my C-rig rod and that's OK since someone needs to use it.
For backseaters, in the more confined space, leaving unused rods flat on the deck will ultimately lead to rods overboard or stepped on. Slip 'em down into the cockpit, handles first and lean 'em against the seat back WITH THE *&%^#! lures secured at the reel or keeper!
Use hook bonnets on all trebles (Before Reb says it..."Remove BEFORE casting.") It'll make getting another rig into action easier 'cause the lures won't grab other rigs, line, other lures, or carpet/upholstery.
A lot of rods are lost because the angler lays one down with a portion hanging over the side, lure dangling from the tip. Not only is it more likely to go over the side if inadvertantly kicked, bumped, whatever, but if the waves are up water may engage the lure and literally tilt or drag the rod over the side. BuZZZZZZZZbaits and largelipped cranks will do that...Yes, I HAVE seen someone lose a rod that way and sometimes one rod drags another with it.
Leaving lures at the tip can, and often does, lead to other disasters. Let's say you are under way on the big motor. Lures are dangling from the tips. Somehow a spool releases, a lure goes, unnoticed, over the side. I've seem multiple rods, so many as four at a time, lost when all line spools off the first rod, loose lures on other rods engage that one as it goes over, and bad stuff happens.
Besides, leaving lures unsecured is not only dangerous to the fisherman but untangling one rig from another (or more) can mean missed opportunities when trying to fire into a school that briefly appears within casting range for the lure that's snagged on another rig.

Before I became boatless bank trash I had some rigid rules for guest anglers;
No alcohol...ever...in the boat. (Occasionally, a lady and I would go out for an on-the-water picnic and MIGHT have ONE beer or glass of Chateau De Lubbock therewith. One was my limit but she could have more if things looked, errrr...promising. But she had to wear a PFD (only.)
You SHALL wear a PFD while underway AND when on TM or drifting if water is rough or of you are physically impaired.
Do not touch my tackle without permission (One member here is exempt from that one.)
Nag ME if I forget to attach the kill switch to myself BEFORE starting the motor. If you're driving, I'll nag you.
ALL lures will be secured at the reel or on the keeper when not in use (and remind ME if I slip.).
Use a bottle to pee in if you have poor balance or the waves are up. If I'm peeing, NO SUDDEN MOVEMENTS! and I'll do the same for you if you warn me. I expect a little "spillage" in the splashwell or on the gunnels...it'll wash off.
No littering in the water, especially loose line.
Warn each other of incoming wakes or large waves.
If I lend you a lure and you lose it that's an acceptable combat loss.
If I lend you a lure and you return it with a knot still on it that's the first strike and you won't get three.
I smoke so you can smoke. Ash will wash or blow away...burns won't. If you smell gas, don't light up until we figure out why.
Female guests can leave the huge floppy hats on the shore. Ditto the huge purses. If you are wearing shorts, swimsuit, are barefooted, etc, bring along lots of sunscreen AND some more covering garments and footwear to stow away after reasonable sunning. I don't want you too scorched to...you know
Tell me if I need to position the boat so you can better cast. I sometimes get absorbed in what I'm doing and I want you to have equal opportunities.

Good read Lancer. The only other thing that I will add is that me and my buddies will also point out any boils or possible top water action that we see. That being said, who ever sees it first should of course get the first cast in that general direction.
Since mine is not a true boat but rather a dual TM pontoon. I spent the money to purchase these.

I don't like to leave them on while fishing, but they have saved my butt more than once. After I purchsed them I realized that I could accomplish the same thing with a swimming noodle and a few pieces of velcro.

These are 3 rod floaters for $10. I just consider it rod insurance.

It's just a 1/4 ounce Stanley Wedge with a 3" mister Twister Meanie tail and the skirt thinned WAY out. I like to share, I wan't to see everyone doing well.

They look nice.. have you ever noticed the fisherman who never takes the shrink wrap off the cork?? I mean what the heck !!!! I look forward to nicely stained handles and a good sweat ring on them. Also I might add the handles are on the wrong side too.

I hear that leaving the wrapping on can trap air and make them float for a few seconds. Don't know if there is any truth to that though.

Kinda. I'm right handed. I fish with a left hand reel for 2 reasons. 1. I don't like to switch the rod over to the other hand after every cast. 2. I'd much rather pull on fish all day with my dominate arm.
