I was fishing one of my Bomber Fat-Free Shad crankbaits today and got 3 fish(2, 2.3, and 3.1 pounds) but I had a question on how they got hooked. Today was the only day where each of the fish was primarily hooked on the front treble hook and the back hook was either hanging free or was subsequently hooked on the exterior of the mouth. What could be the reason behind this? It was quite windy today with gusts over 20mph which is the only factor today that was different from previous days this week fishing with this bait. Was the lure just being hit by the fish from the front instead of the side and rear, leading to the front treble being the main hook to acheive hookset?

I have this happen often and i may be wrong but my guess woulg be that the fish attacked the bait head on or from the side.

First off its 3 fish. Thats a pattern, but not a well established one. I'm not certain we can derive much knowledge from it, or be certain why it was happening, but I do think your theory is probably correct. More often I notice when fish are short striking lures and not the other way which is your case.

Were you fishing the same location from the same angles as the previous days? I ask because my experience on a front hook has come on days where I am able to bring the bait parallel to an ambush point. Most often for me, it occurs when I am tossing my bait beside the weeds, boat dock, or tullies. I usually see the back hook strike when I am casting towards the same structure and bringing the bait away from it.

Truth be told, I'm not 100% sure on the structure on the pond I was fishing at. I did some exploring with another crankbait and the bottom seemed to be mostly small weeds and some brush here or there. I was fishing the same spot from shore as the last time I used the Fat-Free Shad and last week they were all on the rear treble hook. I was also thinking that with the wind my line did end up having a distinct curve to it and when reeling it took some 15 seconds for the line to straighten out to line up with my rod tip. Maybe the bait was moving sideways a bit through the water leading to the front treble hits.

i always chalk this up to the color and action of the bait are perfect. if the color is maybe a litle off or the action is a little off then i think that will cause short strikes. however when they are crushing the bait and eating it like they were for you i would say that the color and action were perfect for the conditions on that given day.

Make a note to yourself or put it in a log of precisely what all the conditions were that day. Also your retrieve speed, cadence, crank color size and so on. ![]() |
