Default You get what you pay for...

first off, this is exactly why I don't buy 2-4 cheap combos a year. but instead save up and buy one, MAYBE two a year.

Before Guntersville last year, I needed a reel for the flippin' stick ym dad built me. I was looking at an Abu silvermax, but couldn't find a lefty. So I got a reel from gander mtn. It's GM brand, but I believe it's made by Pinnacle. I used it in guntersville and wasn't too happy with it. haven't really used it much since. Till today...

I was casting in my yard and playing with my cats. (I cut the hook off a tube head and stick it inside a tube. makes a great practice plug and it won't hurt my cats when they catch it.) Anyways, I got it stuck in our one of like 3 trees... go figure. I was using 30lb braid, so I quickly reeled in the slack and gave it a pull. instead of the lure ocming out of the tree like it should have, the handle of my reel turned backwards, as well as the spool. It resulted in a backlash. it doesn't do it all the time, but it does it right after I reel in.

Somethings definately up with the anti-reverse, but I'm not sure what. I'm thinking on taking it back instead of fixing it. Any idea's what exactly it could be???

Thanks,
BB

as for the reason for the backlash. i am guessing it is antireverse breaking. or something similier.

i had one from gandermt and sometimes when i would cast the handle would turn like crazy then after about 3 months of use the plastic gears inside broke. i know the gears for the drag may have been my falut for pulling on the line when i was hung up but i learned to only buy reels with metal gears so they will last longer. i think you are right you get what you pay for.

getting what you paid for is exactly right. when i returned my bass pro david fritts reel and exchanged it for the revo winch i was told by the reel salesman that a year is about all you can expect out of a bass pro reel. this is coming from a guy who works for bass pro and is paid to sell their reels, and granted $70-$80 isn't a ton of money for a reel but i disagree with him.....for that money i "expect" more than a year out of a reel.

I was visiting relatives about 500 miles from home, and sure enough they wanted to go out for some smallies on a local reservoir so I went to wallyworld and got a pinnicle real and a berkley lightning rod. I love the rod for the price, but the guts came out of the real after the fourth bass over three lbs. I will stick with reals that cost 89.99 and up, dunno why, but have never got a good one for less.

C-rig, you'll love the winch. I fished with Buzzy's a little bit last year, it's a nice reel.

Bassin, when I bought it, i did go with the 79 dollar version over the 49 dollar one. However, my first baitcaster, I 79 dollar Daiwa, still works great and I'm still using. It'll be four years old this year I think.

I'm gonna pray I stuck the receipt in the reel box and try to take it back. I'm sure they'll only give me store credit, but I could put it towards a citica. and only pay 40 for it.

I am gonna take it apart today and see what cheap piece inside crapped out on me.

I think you should just take it back. Usually GM is good about returns and will help you out, even without a receipt on their house brand.

I had a cheap reel start doing that to me, I took it completely apart and put it back together and now it works great....When I was taking it apart I notice alot of the parts were loose, like it was thrown together fast and poorly.....maybe yours is the same or not....But mine has not gave me a problem since....good luck!!!

I took off the handle, drag, etc and all the screws holding the side plate and I for some reason couldn't get the side plate off. I said screw it, it isn't that important, I'm gonna take it back.

I guess I didn't think about my abu round baitcasters, I meant a low profile, but thats just been my personal luck, Im sure there is no real price cut off.

Default Gander Mtn...

Well, we took the reel back to gander mountain tonight. The girls behind the counter didn't know what do to (of course) so they called the manager up to the front. we told him what was wrong, and he replies with, "Well, all baitcasting reels are going to do this."

HA! the handle of a baitcaster isn't supposed to spin backwards when you set the hook... We informed him that this isn't our first baitcaster, and no other baitcasters have ever done this... The reel actually backlashed today while I was tossing a jig in my pond and snapped my 30lb braided line

So in the end, he reluctantly gave me store credit for it, but not before trying to get me to trade it for a new one. So, now I have about 75 bucks in store credit (69.99+tax) (yeah it was 70 bucks, not 80). so was looking around and picked out some plastics, hooks, a new spinnerbait, some BOOYAH jigs, and a back of swimbaits.

Then I realized Great, I'm short a reel. I went over to the counter and looked at a couple. I was gonna get a Daiwa Exceler (79.99) since I've had no problems with Daiwa, even the cheap ones. Then I looked to the reel boxes behind the counter and saw they have the new Citicas... So, I put everything back and shelled out an extra an extra 55 bucks for the citica. I went and looked at braided lines too. I just left hoping we have enough Sufix braid to fill 'er up.

The part I'm really impressed about is I had enough money to get everything I had picked out, but I didn't. Take that monkey!

my shakespere has been breaking, the little zig-zag winder thing is broken, the plastic screw that holds the pin in, is stripped so it just piles up line on the right side.. i've packed pieces of plastic in it and hoping it'll stay in, but it came loose again

time for a new one..

I think maybe the cheaper bps reels may not last that long, but when it comes to there higher end reels like the johnny morris elite I have not had any problems. Nor have I had any problems with my extreme. But only time can tell
