Ok i'm looking to get a pitchin/flippin rod and i have noticed that the actions on these rods vary some depending on manufactuer. Such as....St. Croix rods have mod.fast action, Allstar rods have fast and ex. fast, Kistler have fast. I'm just useing these as examples, not sure what i will buy yet. But my main question is this, what action do you guys think is best for this type of rod? Does it matter or am i making to big of a deal out of it?

I always go with extra fast, but I am sure that fast works well. Also a H or XH rod is best. You don't need much flex because you aren't casting the bait, rather, you are using the momentum of the swing to get the bait to the target. The fast or xfast action is really great for both feel and responsiveness on the hookset and when trying to stop a charging bass from running for cover.

I would recommend the fast action with hev power. I have models in 7'6" and 7'10". If you will be pitchin/flippin I would go for the 7'6" model, it is more versital if you use both techniques. On the other hand if you fish traditional flippin then I would go with the 7'10" it works well with the swinging motion of the lure to the cover.

Fast, Mod. Fast, Extra Fast - every company has their own rating. Bring a reel with you. Attach a heavy weight and have someone pull down on the rod tip and see where each rod bends. Pick the one that feels best to you.
I've got the 7' MH Fast St. Croix Prem. It's a sweet rod for pitching/flipping 3/8 to 1/2 oz jigs or t-rigs. |

I would suggest a medium heavy to heavy action rod with a fast to medium fast tip. I do not like extra fast tips for pitchin. I find it much easier to pitch if there is a little action in the tip. I like a 7 foot rod. Anything longer and it feels clumsy to me. But I'm on the short side so maybe thats why.

If you're using heavier baits, like 1oz and above, I'd definately go with a XF. other than that, you should be fine with just a Fast action, but I wouldn't go less on a flippin' or pitching stick.

I like a fast x fast, H action rod, as long as the rod has lots of back bone, it's good! You don't need it to have much give because you're not casting anything, just using the under hand pendulum motion you use for pitching and flippin'.
