Fished the Redfield reservoir for the first time in more than twenty years and had a ball. Nothing special to report mostly dinks, one respectable bronze back at about 2lbs...

Junior caught his first ever topwater fish on a hula popper. I've attached a picture of what we call a rock bass, ain't that some pretty water in the background?

What is it really or what do you call it?

You can't tell from the pict. but the eyes had a bit of a reddish cast to them.

Anyway Junior was as happy as can be and we had a great day in a 14 foot '78 Montgomery Ward tin boat!

Here in Indiana, we call it a rock bass too. Sometimes a Goggle-eye as well, but that was always older folks...maybe they moved here from somewhere else, where they learned that name?

Thanks Bama, My boy is finally branching out on baits and, after a very frustrating few outings, this was a nice catch for him!

Yep, same here in Michigan. They put up a pretty good fight, kind of a cross between largemouth scrappiness and blue gill body.
They do love those topwater lures! Jitterbugs will nail them everytime.
Spinnerbaits also work well on 'em

once as a kid i had a stinger full of rock bass out of a local pond. had it pegged on the dam. went ot the side for 30 mins to try a spot right? well when i get back and start to pack up to go home.....i grab the stringer. all i bring up is about 15 heads. a huge snapping turtle had the last fish in his mouth as i brought it up. snapped off the body and was gone. man was i pissed. hahahahaha.

yep ol buddy. i had a great-great great uncle back then. he saw it happen too. went and got his shot gun and sat on his poarch . a few days later he shot it. called me over there and yes indeed we had turtle soup. pretty good too.

Oklahoma and Arkansas anglers both call them Rockbass or Goggle eye.....they be sum good eatin too....lol

Ohhyah. He's a rock bass. Way darker than I remember ever seeing. Nice one.

I hate those rock bass with a passion. When I go out fishing on Lake George for smallmouth or largemouth, I will usually end up catching more of them than what I target. They will put their mouths on whatever they see, I've caught them on everything..DS, cranks, spinnerbait, and any plastic you can think of. The worst part is that they don't even put up a fight, they just let you drag them in and they just keep their mouths open so It feels like your bringing in something decent, but after a second or two you realize there is no head-shaking and it is a darn rock bass. I've contemplated killing them...has anyone ever tried eating them?

You have to be careful calling them redeyes, they are not the same thing as the redeye bass.

Call those rock bass. But there is a very similar, or same fish that we call warmouth. I'm not quite sure if they arent all rock bass or if warmouth is a different species.

I may be in the minority here, but I have a tough time telling even between bluegill and shellcracker. I have seen so many regional variations I sometimes just prefer to call them bream.

I do too WTL. Normally I just throw em both in the frying pan and don't worry too much about it.

But a shellcracker has a bit of a redish mark on it's ear.

I gotta tell you, this one slammed the popper and made a pretty hard run after junior set the hook, pretty nice little fight!
