I was referring to Cap'n Mike's third pic. Sorry you got no bowfin in the Potomac...they're a blast to catch.

For some reason I was thinking the pics were of the Potomac and it was a Snakehead but they must be from down on the Piankitank or another body of water closer to Richmond. But now that I've taken a better look....yep that's a Bowfin alright. And a baby one at that!!
You might find a muskie or two and walleye up around Great Falls or the fall line area. I know guys catch them above the fall line up at the Point of Rocks area of the Potomac but that's all fresh water up there. Not brackish like the tidal system. Capt Mike's got a whole bunch of salt water and fresh water species to fish for on the "Pinky Stank". Add in redfish, shark, trout, blue crabs, and a host of other salt water species. |

yep sturgeon. didn't put in the white catfish or the shad species too. Walleye around the bridge? Cool. Never heard about them that far down river.

Do you have Gafftopsail cats there? We hated the slime, but they were pretty good eating.

Well, being stuck on the causeway in Daytona Beach Shores, when the hardheads would start biting, we'd be pretty disappointed. But occasionally, we'd get a Gafftopsail. It is about the same look as a hardhead, but the dorsal fin is like 8 inches high. Like I said, they are exceptionally slimy, but tasty.
I just found out some people call them "Sailcats." Maybe you've heard of those?

I looked them up, Google, and didn't really find anything on them except it being a saltwater species of some sort. Is it a regional name for a brackish water catfish?

Not very sure. Not having lived in more than two regions near the coast (Daytona, Sarasota), I couldn't tell you what they call them elsewhere. God knows the same fish can have dozens of names. Crazy fishermen.
