Default Bracing for a wild night

If you havne't seen the weather forecast for my neck of the woods it doens't look good. They are predicting what they are calling "Extreme Severe Weather" tonight and in all of the red and orang globs on their maps we are gonna be right in the middle of it all. With their new Tor-con scale for predicting your chances of seeing a tornado we are somewhere around an 8 or 9, when Mississippi was torn apart a while back the predictions were way lower than that (somewhere around a 5 I believe). They said that this is the highest chance predicted this year so I am sure it will get exciting. So far this storm has dropped a ton of twisters in Oklahoma and Kansas while it's still making its way here.

When I lived in North Texas I used to hate it when the nasty stuff hit during the night! I like to be able to see it coming, and not on the radar either! Twisters at night are nerve wracking! Good luck tonight!

I hear you Bob, those wild storms are crazy! Nothing like seeing the sky turn a color you've never seen before and knowing that something big is coming. "The calm before the storm" is very real!

Hope all is well for you tonight C-rig, don't take any chances, take cover if need be. We'll keep a good thought for you tonight.

I hope you guys have a storm cellar, Kory.

Even though I know statistically, they are not worth the expense, I would still never build a house out there without one...just my cautious self.

Good luck on riding it out, bud.

Best of luck! I've been watching these storms, and what they've done so far. Take care down there!

Man, didn't realize it was that bad, Kory. I knew they'd mentioned storms, but not to that extent. Be sure and check in tomorrow first chance you get. We don't want to have to track you down, but we will if we have to.

Well it's pretty much over and as far as our end is concerned it wasn't much. We went out to a buddy of mines house since they have a basement. He and I went and fished a pond behind his house while Britney and his wife watched the radar. We caught several fish on spinnerbaits and frogs, best severe storm warning ever lol. Then we ended up sitting in his bass boat and talking fishing the rest of the night. Never even rained at his house but when we got home everything was wet so I know we atleast got some rain. There was several tornado warnings around us but nothing too exciting. How many people can say that they took shelter because of a storm and ended up catching fish in the process.

2 weeks ago when the tornados moved thru south arkansas, I was fishing a tournament, the tournament director said and I quote "we dont care if you see dorothy, the dog, and the house fly by we are fishing''. We put our first 3 keepers in the boat while the tornado sirens were going off. (we had went back into some back water, motoring out wasn't an option, and their were too many cypress trees to hit a bank, so we just said screw it and kept fishing.)

Wow, doc...I would like to know what kind of tournament that is...small, informal, or well-organized. from your use of the term "director," it sort of sounds like the latter.

In that case, it sounds like the guy doesn't have too much in the way of brains.

As a former restaurant manager, on several occasions I royally pissed off my regional bosses by shutting the store down in very bad weather. However, they shut up when I showed them the law that says under a tornado warning (has to be a warning), it is illegal to force employees to continue working. You can keep them on the clock out of courtesy, but you can not allow them to stay in front of house.

Now I know your tournament is not an employer/employee situation, but the guy was seriously opening himself and the tournament organization up to all manner of personal and civil liability for not suspending the tournament during a tornado warning. Perhaps you should mention this to him the next time.

it was the 2010 boomtown bass classic. Close to 100 boats came to fish in the bad weather. The Dorothy Comment was aired over the kix 103 radio station that was covering the tournament and weigh in all day. LINK

As a guy who got caught in a tornado (literally within the funnel), I do not play around with bad storms. As a young man, I thought they were great fun, but that period of my life is over. It's not fear, but total respect for the power of those storms. We are insignificant ants to a tornado, and to pretend otherwise is just ignorance and/or stupidity.

If that ever happened to me, I would demand my entry fee back at the very least, but I certainly wouldn't be fishing in it by choice.

Kory, i'm glad you hear that nothing happened.....The line of tornado's that hit Oklahoma city last night was headed right for us, and concidering we took a direct hit last year, i'm more then a bit "Gun shy" about getting slammed again, so needless to say I was quite nervous when I heard it was coming at us, and I spent a frantic half hour preparing the house so to speak and getting our hidy hole ready in the closet....lol. But fortunately the main storm stayed just south of us and like you, we didn't even get any rain, so my stress level was able to return to normal...lol

I pray for all those folks that weren't so lucky last nite.....And the folks that survived have a long road ahead of them trying to rebuild and replace what the tornados destroyed.

I was fishing a tournament years ago on the Potomac and a storm that dropped a tornado on LaPlata, MD came across the river while we were running up the river. Probably the stupidest thing I've ever done. Also fishing a Stren tournament on the river not too long ago three boats were sunk due to a bad t-storm that rolled through. Tournament directior did the right thing and got people off the water before it hit and told them not to run back to weigh in and to find shelter if they called him. Smart man.

Guy from a local radio show was out in midwest chasing tornado's. Got within 20 yards of one yesterday from what was said on the program this morning (probably a bad estimation). Not the brightest thing to do.....
