Instead of buying the patent-pending hat cam from one of the users on here, I decided to make my own using a very lightweight minicam and a hat.

The camera is a Sony HD Bloggie. It is only 3.8 oz and uses an SD card so I can upgrade memory by just purchasing a bigger card. It cost around $150 and has made my fishing trips so much more fun.

The camcorder is a HD Sony Bloggie for around $150 at Best Buy. I then went to Lowes and purchased a 1/4 - 20 x 1/2 Combo Round Screw with nut and a couple of washers. I then purchased a new fishing hat from BPS (because I wanted one) and drilled a hole in the brim (just big enough for the screw). The hole was drilled close to the forehead. Then you just tighten the camcorder onto the screw. The washers add additional support so it doesn't put side strain on the screw and camera. The size of the screw I mentioned above is the standard size screw for any camcorder than mounts onto a tripod (and that is about every one of the camcorders now). I use a nut when the camera is not on the hat so I don't lose the screw or washers. You initially feel the additional weight but soon forget it is on your head. I chose the Bloggie because it has a "rotatable" lense part so it is not a fixed angle for video recording.
Overall cost was $225 dollars but that included the additional 2 yr warranty from Best Buy that included water damage. |
