Default drive it like a rental..

a bunch of us got discussing rental cars. the one thing everyone can agree on is. if you don't go over them like your buyin the car. you may just be up chit creek.. ya i am about to name names and point fingers..

i have rented 5 cars in the last few years.all of them for long distance trips to funerals. i have had one lemon out of the 5.

it was from enterprise. i was on my up to ny with my folks for my uncles funeral..i had a mazda 626-nice car-i get a flat in va.they sent a wrecker to change the flat..both front wheels had wire brushs stickin out the sides so i echanged the car at richmond va for a pt cruiser..got up there no problem. coming back near harrisburg pa the moter goes "clunk bang" when the replacement ride showed up..i climbed all over the enterprise guys but..in the form of " it don't make it to nc and i''l insert it in your but sans lube"..

some of you know the big white expedition extra lenth i rolled into kylake with was bought from a rental place-by my ex-girlfriend-..having rented from the same company before-triangle-when 6 of us went to tampa.with no problems..

mom and pop went to orlando not long ago. they rented from "buget" and got a caddy which i drove home-sweet ride!!- down and back not a hitch. pop did gripe about fuel cost.pop can't drive anymore so he had to find something to gripe about..

my bro-dirt-took his wife and two kids to the beach two weeks ago..i told him to stay away from enterprise rent a car. does he listen? hell no..he got to carolina beach when sizzzle, clunk, clunk, happened. as the tranny let go..he called me-i was in wv-i told to check it like he was buying it and check the tires also..

i was talking to my friend who travels the world fixing these big azzed machines. i know he uses rental cars all the time.. he told me that his company will only rent from heriz or buget..

so if you have rented a wreck lets hear the horror story...

I rent mostly from Hertz - about twice a month for 3-4 days. I've had pretty good luck. However, I did have a Jag S type 4.2L (V-8) and after one day the transmission light came on. The car had a lot of power!
I put a burn mark in a Lincoln LS right on the seat, darn smokes.... That fake leather crap really works!
Oh, and parking tickets in rental cars will find you!

And the best one - The difference between a rental car and a 4x4? A rental car will go anyplace you want it!

I rent cars a lot now, but not as much as I used to. I probably have had close to 200 rental cars over the years and most are just plain old boring cars with the smallest engine available. I rent from Avis 95% of the time and really like them, Budget is second choice. I returned a car to Hertz about 12 years ago in LaCrosse, WI and it was before the counter had opened and the lot was full. I parked in the short term spot in front of their normal spots and they charged me $50 extra for it, never rented from Hertz again.

I had a Camry a few months ago in Michigan that was crap, it was severely underpowered and the tires were junk and wouldn't grip at all in the snow. When a light turned green you were lucky to get through it by the time it turned yellow! And that was with only a couple inches of snow on the ground.

Most of the time I have had good luck. I had a loaded 2010 F150 4 door in Colorado last month that was really nice and did well on the mountain roads when I went exploring.

Most of the rentals in my area tend to stay somewhat local, within a few hundred miles. Overall the few times we have needed it have been low mile (under 40K) newer rentals so nothing problematic. I know if or when we do, we will not take one that has more than 50K miles.
