rod/reel combo

i need a new rod and reel and i fish a lot of senkos and crankbaits. what do ya'll think would be a good all around combo for less than $150?

There are quite a few in that price range. Â*Bass pro, Cabelas-even your local sporting goods store will have some good ones. Â*The BPS reels I use will run you about $100 in a combo, but I don't like the hump handle the BPS rods have so I pair the reel with an AllStar rod-runs right at $100 for both.

For an all-around bass rod it is tough to beat a 6-6 MH action.

yeah- i like the all star rods and i'll definitely look into that real. i've got an ambassadeur but i've got it set up to catch speckled trout and i hate to change line all the time. thanks man.

I've heard good things about the Extreme Lite, too, but have never tried one. Â*Yet ;D

yep, i only fish spinning rods/reels. basically the only reason is that i have not learned to use one yet, and i cant get myself to buy something i dont know how to use. one of these days i'll either get it as a present, or see if anybody i know has one so that i can learn. also, spinning reels get more distance and are basically easy to use. so untill i get one for free, or barrow one, im stickin to spinning rods/reels.

yeah- he's said before that he only uses spinning reels but i don't see how they are practical for every type of fishing. it's harder to thumb your line to feel a bite and it's harder to wench fish out of heavy cover when you're fishing jigs and stuff. i was just curious about what he does in those situations.

that's cool, i'm on a budget too man. i think you'll like em if you try one. they're built just like a wench and that's what they do.

i dont see how it is hard in any of those situations. as far as feeling the line, just use your index finger, i reel with my left hand so the reel is facing down and makes it easy to feel the line. and getting them out of cover, thats not hard at all. i think baitcasters and spinning reels can basically do the same stuff.

i personally like spinning better, but your at a disadvantage if you cant use baitcasting or conventional gear. When we get our boat, i will only be using casting equipment, except for light pplastics

yes you can flip and pitch with spinning gear. i caught a huge bass today pitching with one(see ''the sign reads ''GONE FISHIN'' in the message board area*)

You can pitch much easier and you can lay it in the water quieter if you have a baitcaster.

i dont know, i can lay a lure in the water pretty darn quiet. and i can do it alot farther away from me.

If you can do all that with a spinning reel I can only imagine how good you would be with a bait caster

Well we obviously haven't used spinning reels much, or have an aversion to them ??? You can do everything with a spinning reel that you can with a baitcaster, just different techniques. I will say that the baitcaster are a better option for pitching and flipping, but the spinning reels allow more distance. A lot of folks say that the spinning reels are for lighter lines etc... And I say that's a whole lot of crap. It's the size of the equipment you use. You wouldn't want to use a smaller version reel/rod with 20 lb test because it can't handle it. But you can buy bigger sizes that handle it great. Both reel have benefits and downsides. But you won't get a backlash on a spinning reel Not trying to stir up the same old argument again. I now use both, and like both. But don't think the spinning reel can't do all of the above, it's the user who can make it work, based on techniques. I can still cast my spinning reel much more accurately. However I used spinning reels exclusively for probably my last 30 years of fishng. Not all of that was for bass though.

Ya just have to get used to stopping the line with your fingers or hand on spinning outfits, or hit the bail to close ...its really not that hard,, just practise

I've had a lot of time to ponder on this subject myself and I have a few question to add. First I've used spinning reels the whole time I've fished. Never had a problem with any technique (other than picthing). No wind problems with backlash. I can cast with acurracy and longer. SO WHY in the world have I bought a baitcaster and why do I see the pros use nothing but baitcasters(expect when finessing) Is it strange to use nothing but spinning reels or just a personal choice.

the only situation i have found that a spinning rod rules with out question is when you skip lures back under docks. it took me for ever to switch to baitcaster's but i did. here is a thought for ya not all pro's use spinning gear for finesse dion hibdon and his father catch a ton of bass from under docks with spinning reels. you almost never see them with a bait caster in there hands.

Buy an Ambassaduer 5500 and a 6'6 MH Berkley Lightning Rod.You can pay more if you want to,but you really don't have to.

Thats not a bad idea, buy a 39 dollar baitcaster and give it a try, or borrow one from a buddy.
Try a heavy lure and put too much brake on it and learn to ease off the brake until you feel comfortable ..
The biggest advantage I think is that flipping isn't as hard on your arms after 10 hours of fishing with a baitcaster than spinning IMO...and also the obvious,, a baitcaster is a wench when bringing in a bass..
I have met plenty of great fishermen that never ever use a baitcaster..dont be pressured into fishing a baitcaster just cus your buddy does..fishing should be a pleasureable experience,, dont pressure yourself into baitcasting just to "keep up with the Jones"
